lanceholt Posted February 8, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 8, 2015 We are a family of three adults who will dock for the day in Civitavecchia. My husband and I used Romecabs for a transfer to the train station last year and they were excellent. We aren't interested in a tour per se, but want transportation to/from the Vatican for the day, pick up and drop off. We are in our late 60's and don't want the hassle of the train...looking for easy. The Rome on your own tour from our ship is $99/person and we may have to take a cab from drop off to Vatican City on top of that. Haven't had a quote yet but are interesting in hearing from people who used them rather than the ship shuttle into the city.
tuleia Posted February 10, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2015 In June 2014, in order to maximize our meager 6-hours in Rome (all but two of us had previously been to Rome), we had arranged for RomeCabs to drop off members of our group of 8 at two locations: directly at the entrance to the Vatican Museum, and at Trastevere Square. We ultimately reconvened at the Spanish Steps, at which our efficient RomeCabs driver was waiting to take us back to the ship at the port in Civitavecchia. As in the past (2009, 2010, 2012), RomeCabs provided our group with timely, reliable, friendly, and safe, transportation-only service to designated stops. Hope this helps. Have a terrific trip. lanceholt Posted February 10, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Thanks....if you don't mind can you tell me how their prices compare to the "on your own" excursions.....we would have to pay $300 for the 3 of us for ship's transportation. tuleia Posted February 11, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 11, 2015 Our ship docked at 7:00 A.M., and our designated RomeCabs driver picked us up at the ship at 8:00 A.M. and timely dropped us off at the ship at 5:00 P.M. for a 7:00 P.M. sail-away. The per-person cost for each member of our group of 8 was 50 Euros (tip is extra). We were comfortably transported in a new 8-passenger, air-conditioned Mercedes mini-van. Driver was terrific ... safely and skillfully maneuvering through the side streets surrounding the Vatican in order that we wouldn't waste any time stuck in the clogged traffic ... and dropped off 4 members of our group directly in front of the museum entrance. We all had a wonderful day.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted February 11, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 11, 2015 If you look at their website, a one-way transfer for up to 3 people is 140 euro (that's about $160). So a round trip would be in the vicinity of $320.
lanceholt Posted February 11, 2015 Author #6 Share Posted February 11, 2015 THANKS! I will email for a reservation and quote later today. Now I am wondering if there is something similar we could use for our transfer into Florence!
tuleia Posted February 11, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 11, 2015 At which port will your ship be docked? Livorno? If so, I can share transportation info from our 2008 cruise.

tuleia Posted February 12, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 12, 2015 In 2008, we used Tuscany By Taxi for an air-conditioned, mini-van, transfer-only service between Livorno and Florence. Because Tuscany By Taxi is based in Livorno, they are permitted to enter the port itself in order to meet cruisers directly adjacent to their docked ship. This is extremely convenient and saves a great deal of time. Our assigned Tuscany-By-Taxi driver was prompt, courteous, spoke English well, and drove safely. He pointed out sights of interest along the drive into the city and return to the ship (about an hour and-a-half drive to and from Florence). Unlike the buses that transport those on a ship’s excursions … who must off-load their passengers at the outskirts of Florence, Tuscany-By-Taxi is authorized to drive within the city-proper. Our driver first took us to the pedestrian area fronting the Cathedral Square, Santa Croce Square, the Uffizi Gallery, the Gallery of the Academy and Pitti Palace, in order that he could show us the location at which he would be waiting for our designated return to the ship. We had arranged for Tuscany-By-Taxi to pre-purchase our entrance tickets to the Accademia (#1 on our itinerary) to view the statue of David; so our driver dropped us off directly at the entrance to the museum … thereby avoiding the extremely long cue of visitors … personally spoke to the guard at the entrance … who then immediately opened the door to let us in. Our driver then left us to explore Florence on our own. On our return to the ship, our driver stopped at Piazzale Michelangelo for a breathtaking view of Florence from this hilltop square. We then proceeded to Pisa where taxis have access directly to Miracle Square and the Leaning Tower. From Pisa, the return to Livorno is about 30 minutes. Their e-mail address is: booking@tuscanybytaxi.it Happy planning!
lanceholt Posted February 12, 2015 Author #10 Share Posted February 12, 2015 Thanks, approx what did you pay for the service?
tuleia Posted February 13, 2015 #11 Share Posted February 13, 2015 Sorry ... that specific information has long since been scrubbed from my brain ... but I do recall that the cost was surprisingly low ... and by far the least expensive of the transfer/tour costs of our 12-night Mediterranean cruise.
