Fresh squeezed juice is alive and well

There are two Cafe al Bacio locations on some of the S-Class ships -- although it's possible this is only true for Reflection. There's the main location on the fifth floor, and then a smaller secondary location in the Oceanview Cafe :)

Interesting difference

Her fresh squeezed was provided by Suite butler, and she asked him and he said it was fresh squeezed. And she said it definitely tasted fresh squeezed, pulp(the best part) and all.

Sounds like she got the new product that Celebrity Cruises posted about on the other thread.

What people are upset about is that the juice is no longer being made by sticking oranges in the machine that squeezes them on the spot. From your wife's description there is no indication they have gone back to the old style of actually squeezing on the ship.

You can get an excellent juice in the store by buying "not from concentrate" that has pulp and all and is not that different from fresh squeezed.

Hi, Are you referring to the bar inside of the buffet? I have never

heard of that bar being called Cafe Al Bacio....I just know it as

the portside bar at the buffet.

It's entirely possible I'm mistaken now that I look for more information online. I had thought that I had read somewhere on here about there being a secondary location of the Cafe on some ships, but now I can't find anything about it. Maybe I made it up

I thought the "fresh squeezed" whatever it was tasted great. My challenge was actually finding it. When we dined in the MDR for breakfast, they were serving the free powdered stuff. We asked about the fresh squeezed you can buy, one person said it was only available at Oceanview buffet. Another waiter said they did offer it...they just had to go to the buffet to get it. Seemed strange to me, but whatever. Then another morning, I was at the OV buffet around 10:30am for a late breakfast and asked about the juice. I was told the station was closed...they sent all the juice over to the pool bar. Went to the pool bar and they sent me back to OV station saying they didn't have any! Was just a mixup in communication... finally did get the juice and all that walking back in forth burned off the calories before I drank it :D

That's what the bar area is called. It's considered a smaller version. That's where the coffee drinks are made whenyou dine in the buffet. It's also where you used to be able to get the fresh oj!

Aye. she and her sister take a traditional "sisters cruise in the spring. I'll be with her this fall from Venice.

I totally understand. My sister and I will be on a cruise in Europe in 2016. Her husband, an old navy man , just says" Go have fun, been there done that..." He is a peach!

OK thank you for confirming that I'm not crazy. I was getting worried there! :D

This did not happen on Celebrity. I got violently sick from drinking fresh squeezed oj. Unless the oranges are cleaned before squeezing, you may get very sick. The oj machine must be very clean. Bacteria from the dirty skin can get into the oj. I do not use fresh squeezed oj. Melons are also a source of bacteria. If the outside is not clean, the knife that cuts it spreads bacteria onto the melon. Be careful. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly.

Interesting! ...read on about the answer we got on the removal of the Fresh Squeezed Juice.

For those that say the Fresh Squeezed was on your sailing, when did you sail?

I am not sure about the juice that the OP's (jjmock) wife had, but the "new" juice does have pulp in it. She could have assumed it was FS.

Here is a post that I made a few days ago about our experience on our Equinox cruise ending 2 weeks ago.

There is confusion with some people between "fresh squeezed" and "not from concentrate". In the past, there was fresh squeezed in Blu. On our recent cruise, a not from concentrate was being served.

Thank you for replying! I think that for now I will probably leave the wording in the FAQ the same as it currently is (frozen fresh-squeezed) until I see some confirmation from the Celebrity rep on these boards that they've changed things up again. It's not that I don't trust you, it's that I don't trust the lack of consistency from Celebrity in what they're saying vs what they're doing...

We drink OJ that is "not from concentrate" in our home. Just saying.:D

Also the stores in our area have started selling fresh squeezed juice. Looks funny when it seperates, but OMG it's so good. It won't ruin my vacation if the just is squeezed elsewhere, but I notice those things and would prefere it was done on the ship.

As for eggs, they may not be powdered eggs, but they weren't fresh eggs my SO had in Blu last year when she ordered them scrambled. Too many business trips and eating at too many hotel buffets have taught me the difference. She ordered scrambled eggs from room service and they were not fresh eggs. Ordered them in Blu, not fresh. In both cases she did not like them. I figure you have to ask for fresh scrambled eggs.

Again, didn't ruin our cruise.:D

You are correct, the eggs are not powdered. They come in a carton, and are the same as those served in many hotels for breakfast. The breakfast menu in BLU states that the eggs prepared there are "fresh", so they should have been. I know about the "carton" eggs because I have a dairy allergy, and was advised on board that the eggs ordered from the breakfast menu, are NOT dairy free. They come from a carton which, among other things added, has milk. I always have to write "fresh eggs only" on the breakfast menu, or advise my waiter in the DR, to avoid a most unpleasant experience after breakfast.

I prefer juice from "concentrate"...tastes better and is more uniform in flavor! And, no 'pits" or "pulp"! It's what I drink at home...it's what most folks drink at home!

I drink fresh OJ at home. The stuff from concentrate tastes off to me and will never buy it.

Orange juice and grapefruit juice at the elite breakfast used to be available by the pitcher and looked frothy fresh. The buffet style offerings followed the dodo to extinction and now choice of delivered juice comes by the glass. On Reflection the grapefruit looked and tasted "fresh" but the Orange juice was not even up to concentrate standard.

Unfortunately grapefruit juice is not compatible with my medication and good orange juice, tasty as it is, contains more sugar than I want to consume regularly.

And eggs for breakfast...(late to avoid the crowds in Oceanview ) I like to order and watch the real stuff going into the pan.

Many of the bars and restaurants have espresso machines to make coffee based drinks. When you order espresso in the restaurant do you think that thye go to Cafe al Bacio for the coffee?

You can get espresso based drinks at the bar in the buffet, casino bar, Passport bar, and one at the back of the ship. They may not be able to make all of the drinks that are in the menu at Cafe Al Bacio but the basics are there.

When ordering eggs, you need to ask for "scrambled eggs made with FRESHLY CRACKED EGGS" We always do that and get fresh eggs ommelets, scrambled, etc. One time I forgot to ask this way but my husband did and the difference was like day and night.

On Reflection, I believe the one on Deck 14 is called Oceanview Bar, and is located near the entrance to Oceanview Cafe. Only 1 al bacio, as far as I know, but I could be wrong.

On my last two cruises last year on Reflection and then Eclipse there was orange juice available in both the dinning room and in the buffet. These were quite pleasant but not freshly squeezed. Having a premium package I could ask for and received fresh orange juice which was really delicious in both locations.

As for the scrambled eggs I have no idea what eggs they use. I only know that I ask for scrambled eggs on board as they are the best scrambled eggs ever and much better even than my own!

It takes all sorts doesn't it?

Trust me, folks. The bar in the Oceanview on Reflection that is on the port side as you enter the Buffet has signage over it that says Al Bacio Secundo. And it has the espresso machines etc there. It is where you would get specialty coffees or fresh squeezed juices or alcohol drinks or soft drinks (all fee drinks unless you either have a drink package or are Elite Plus for the coffees....)

Interesting tidbit! Now I can make only one stop at breakfast to get my OJ (whatever it may consist of), my bottled water, and my hot chocolate! In the past, DH and I get our OJ, eat breakfast, go back to the bar and get our bottled water, and then head down to Café Al Bacio for the HC. :D

There is a big difference between fresh OJ - as in, squeezed from oranges very recently on board - and orange juice that's not from a concentrate. The presence of pulp in the orange juice is NOT necessarily an indication that it is freshly squeezed. We squeeze oranges and grapefruits at home for juice, and there's a certainly a difference in the flavour. Our 23 year old son won't drink the freshly squeezed OJ - he prefers the "not from concentrate OJ". He doesn't like the taste of the freshly squeezed - says it tastes funny. :p

Recently Marketplace (a national consumer affairs show here in Canada), on the CBC had an interesting show devoted to OJ:

The cartons say "100% pure and natural." But juice-drinkers who believe that premium juice is minimally processed and freshly made may find that their glass is only half full.

A joint investigation by CBC Marketplace and Radio-Canada's L'épicerie reveals that much of the premium not-from-concentrate orange juice on the market, including juices from Tropicana, Simply Orange, Oasis and others, is highly processed and may be stored for several months before making its way to supermarket shelves.

That processing may keep the juice from spoiling, but it also strips the flavour, which has to be put back into the product to give the juice its orange flavour.

"If you're paying premium thinking that it's a fresh-squeezed product, then there is a problem there, because it's not," Alissa Hamilton, author of the book Squeezed: What You Don’t Know About Orange Juice, told Marketplace co-host Tom Harrington.

PepsiCo, which owns Tropicana, told Marketplace in a statement that "our products meet the requirements of the food and drug regulations."

Juice drinkers in several U.S. states have filed class-action lawsuits, charging the makers of premium orange juice with deceptive practices for marketing their juices as fresh and natural.

A second, smaller cafe Al Bacio, aptly named Il Secondo Bacio indeed resides in the Oceanview cafe on Celebrity Reflection.

It is more a speciality coffee bar (including freshly squeezed OJ as per machine in the picture [emoji14], taken before its alleged removal) to service the buffet area than having its own dedicated seating area.

It doesn't look much different to the generic bar on the port side of the ocean view buffet to me, except it has chairs and a fancy name above it [emoji5]️
