Copenhagen to Airport ~ Best Way

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We'll be on a Princess Baltic cruise that starts and ends in Copenhagen.

I'm trying to determine the best way for us to get from the ship to the airport after the cruise. On another thread, I read that Princess charges $40, for transport and takes your luggage right to the airport. You don't have to look for it after the cruise. (I'm not sure if it's $40 pp or per couple)

Has anyone used this service and gotten to the airport without their luggage also arriving?

Any idea the cost of a taxi is from the dock to the airport? Are there many taxi's lined up waiting? Someone suggested sharing the cost with another couple, but won't the taxi's trunk be too small for the luggage of 4 people...unless there are some sort of mini-vans there?

How long is the ride from the dock to the airport? Our flight is at noon, so we need to be there by 10:00AM.

Also, we'll be in Copenhagen 2 days prior to the cruise. Is there a way to pre-book a taxi service to meet us at the docks?

Thanks,

Jane

Like Jane, I am looking for transportation in Copenhagen, but from the airport to the ship. I heard that RSSC wants $75/pp. Does anyone know of any car services? I would like something a bit better than a taxi, since we may arrive a little early for boarding, but don't want to pay what the cruise line is asking.

Thanks,

Jim

Just back from this cruise. Princess indicated that there would NOT be many taxis waiting at the pier, however, we found that to be not true. I think when they arrived the week prior, taxis weren't really aware that they were there. You will need a station wagon taxi if you have a lot of luggage. This is what we used. The fee to the airport from our hotel, which was not a big distance from the ship, was 200 kroner. From the hotel to the ship was just about 70 kroner. It's about a 20 minute drive.

It bears mentioning that this was the easiest disembarkation of our 14 Princess cruises and it went very quickly because most people are having their luggage forwarded directly to the airport (and take the transfers) so there aren't a lot of back-ups. We disembarked over an hour and a half before their estimated and published time for our group.

The taxi might be cheaper but you might have to wait and you will have to hassle with your luggage. Depending upon your personal situation, that might be ok.

Have a great trip!

HI Chris,

Thanks so much for the info. Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me that the cruiseline tells people that it's difficult to get a taxi.

I just found out today that we have free transfers to the airport, so that settles that.

However, I'm a little nervous about not seeing my luggage until we arrive at the airport. No problems?

Thanks,

Jane

I know that most people prefer taking a taxi to using public transport, but for those who don't mind trains and who would like to save some money, the cost from Copenhagen airport to Nordhavn station (the closest to Freeport, where Princess docks) is 25.50 Danish Krone. That is just over $4. A taxi will cost you around 250 Krone, which is $40. That is for up to 4 people, not per person, as the Princess transfer.

We took the train both ways and found them fast, clean and reliable. There are some direct trains between Nordhavn and the airport, but most of the time you need to change trains at the Central Station. The ride takes around 25 minutes plus around 10 minutes to walk to Nordhavn station from the ship.

There was quite a long queue of people waiting for taxis at the pier when we left, so what some did was start walking and then hail a taxi that was heading towards the ship. You might want to try this if you are in a hurry to get to the airport.

We had originally planned to take a taxi from the ship to the airport on our 05/19 cruise on the Grand.

But my husband had become ill and was using a wheel chair. So I decided to book the Princess transfers just a few hours before they stopped selling them (about 2 days prior to the end of the cruise)

Boy, was I ever glad I did that. Not only did we not have to claim our luggage at the pier, Princess assisted us all the way from the Pier, picked up our luggage which was waiting for us at the airport and escorted us into the terminal right up to the check in counter of SAS. They were terrific. I shudder to think what it would have been like if we had taken a taxi, and tried to maneuver a wheelchair and 5 peices of luggage.

Sometimes trying to save a few dollars isn't always the wisest move.

As I said, taking public transport is not for everyone. My husband and I only had 2 medium sized trolley cases and a small backpack each, plus we are quite a long younger than most people on the cruise, so carrying our luggage for 15 minutes was not a problem for us. Obviously if you are on a wheelchair things are different and comfort is a higher priority than cost. Still, I think that $40 per person for a ride to the airport is a total rip-off by Princess.

jebjab, it sounds like you only purchased a one way transfer from Princess, did you only have to pay 20$ pp? Do you put your luggage outside your stateroom the night before disembarking, and then you don't see (or have to handle) your luggage again until you arrive at airport? Our flight is not til 12noon, will they rush us off the ship early, or can we relax over breakfast? Is it possible to sightsee in Copenhagen early morning of disembarking, then come back on ship to get lugguge? Thanks for info

We purchased the transfers through Princess as well, they were $40 pp, one way. I agree with Jebjab that they were handled beautifully. We were some of the last people to get off the ship and there was a HUGE line to get a taxi. People in that line were yelling at the Princess personnel about it even though they had been duly warn.

We put our luaggage out the night before and didn't see it again until the airport. We had plenty of time to relax before we disembarked for our 1 pm flight.

adgtravel,

We only purchased a one-way transfer from Princess. From the ship

to the airport. I believe it was $40 PP.

You put your luggage outside your cabin the night before and don't see it or handle it until you arrive at the airport where it is held in a special area and easy to find.

We also had a 12 noon flight, but were assigned to a bus departing @ 6:45am. Others on our flight were assigned a later bus. It's just the luck of the draw. People with later flights were still assigned to early buses and were transported to a airport hotel to await their flights.

You will not have time to sightsee that morning. They want you off the ship as early as possible. Trying to diseambark 3,000 passengers and arrange transportation for most is not an easy task, but I thought they were most efficient.

HI

I just took the cruise and because I was going to the airport alone the $40 (one way) was very worth while. It was great. I got off the ship at 8:35 and was to the airport by 9:30. Had to wait about 20 minutes for the shuttle bus. It is so nice not to have to worry about the luggage. At the airport I just grabbed a free trolley threw my bags on and headed up to check in. Effortless. Same with on the way there. Luggage collected then left in a location boarded a bus and luggage to cabin by 4:30 that afternoon.

Certainly it might be cheaper if you have someone to share taxi with and luggage can fit. I don't reccomend Princess transfers for all cruises but have used twice in Europe and it is the way to go in my opinion.

Jane110, We just returned from the Baltic and I would recommend the following regarding transport. We (6 adults) spent the first night at Hotel Vesterport where we arrangement for "Maxi Taxi" 70 25 25 25 to transport us at 4:00 to the ship so we had time for a walking tour with Richard and a canal cruise prior to getting on the ship. Our driver was at the hotel waiting for us -the taxi had room for 6-8 and held all of our luggage. On our return to from the ship to the airport, we arranged for "Maxi Taxi" to pick us up at the port at 9:00 for transfer to airport for 3:40 flight. The driver was there ahead of time, we did NOT stand in the taxi line, just crossed the road to wait on our arranged transport. The cost for six of us, including a well deserved tip was around $60 - ($20) per couple. I would highly recommend this arrangement.

Hyuall: I'm very interested in the Maxi Taxi's you wrote about. In all my reading about Copenhagen I have failed to read about these. Did a search on the web, but don't seem to find the information I need about these. Could you please let me know how you went about reserving them. My biggest concern about the regular taxi's is the amount of luggage we will have and being able to fit it all into a regular taxi. In Zurich we almost didn't get it into one since the taxi's there are not very big. I'm guessing they must use a van with the Maxi Taxi.

I appreciate any information you can give me. We leave July 1 for Copenhagen for our cruise on the 8th. Going in ahead and will be able to scope out the area, but like to know ahead.

Hulagirl,

Other than the phone number and name of taxi service, I don't have any other information. The Hotel Vesterboro called them for us and indicated that we needed a cab for six with room for luggage, so that was our first contact with the taxi company. The driver was always prompt and it was a great relief not to have to wait in the taxi line to get a taxi to the airport. You might see if a site on Copenhagen has any taxi information and go from there.

Thank you for the information about the taxi. As of now, we will be taking the limo from the hotel for the airport to hotel transfer. Have nothing set up yet for the trip from the hotel to the ship. Glad to know they do have taxi's large enough to handle people with several pieces of luggage. Thanks for the information.

How did you get from Nordhavn station to the ship? Taxi? Or was it within walking distance. I know Nordhavn is close, but with luggage, I was wondering how you got to the ship? I plan to do the same next summer.

Steve,

On turnaround day between our Baltics and transatlantic cruises, we walked from the ship to Nordhavn to catch the train to Helsingor to see Kronberg Castle. It's not a bad walk but I would not do it with luggage - unless you travel light. We did not notice any taxi's at the Nordhavn station, but then we were not looking for one. We had planned on the train from the Copenhagen airport to our hotel but after the long flight we decided not to hassle with the luggage and took a taxi.
