(not) another dress code Q: [1st_timer]

HAL states the dress code for dinner on the ships is the dress code for the evening. If it is formal night for dinner, it is formal night in all public areas all evening.

Does everyone follow that? No.

HAL says " In order to complement your fellow guests, Holland America Line asks that you observe the suggested dress code throughout the entire evening." This does not add clarity - too many weasel words ("asks", "suggested") for me. Interpret it as you wish. The dress code lawyers should be making arguments and counter-arguments about what it really means shortly.

The dress code lawyers can indeed debate what "suggests" means but the reality of the issue is that the dress code is enforced only in the MDR.

Dress as formal as you wish with the minimum of jacket and tie for males for MDR dining. As many passengers do after dinner, change into comfortable clothing and enjoy the ship.

You will see tuxedos and shorts coexisting in the ship's bars, casino, smoking areas, and Shops on Formal Night. I have never seen a tuxedo in the ship's movie theater.

To restrict those, who have dined in the Lido Restaurant to avoid wearing a jacket/tie, from going to common areas after dinner would cause an explosive "we vs they" situation that HAL does not wish to referee.

As long as the person next me in the theater has pants on shorts, Khaki's or a tux I don't mind. Of course I always set in an aisle seat, so guess I should ask my wife her opinion. After dinner on formal nights for both of us it is back to something tasteful but comfy. It is known at our house as casino casual.:D I feel that after I have dressed for the formal meal the rest of the evening is mine.:)

Personally, I stay in my dinner outfit throughout the evening. But then, I'm probably what you might call an "outlier". I wouldn't mind if every night were Formal Night, and I'd wear my tux to breakfast if I thought I could get away with it. :D

Okay, on my next cruise I'm totally doing this. Challenge: Accepted! :)

Actually, the reality is Sometimes Some Dining Room Managers on Some ships will enforce dress code. It is inconsistent and unpredictable.

OK, well, we have read all the threads on dress code for MDR on HAL.

Now then, we've not seen any discussion on dress code for evening entertainment venues.

---

Is there one?

What works best?

Does it matter?

When we go to the casino after dinner on Formal Night we stay in our "formal" wear. Then, once I've lost my "allotment" of $$$s we head back to the cabin and change into smart casual to enjoy more time outdoors.

On the now-rare occasion that we go to the Lido for the late night snack, we are in our casual wear on "formal" nights.

Have only had one comment about our smart casual clothing on formal night, and that was from a passenger. Don't ask ;)

(BTW our smart casual clothing would be: for DH a golf-style shirt and docker-style pants and for me would be linen or silk pants with a top that would NOT be a t-shirt ;) )

Just like the others have said it is a "suggestion" and not a "rule". I stay dressed after dinner and enjoy the fact that some others do to when I see them in the Theater, Casino or Piano Bar.

To me personally it's just another hassle to get out of your "formal" clothes as it is to get into them.

I have NOT worn a tie on formal night last 3 TAs. I wear jacket with silk mock turtle pullover. I would say I am at least as well dressed as 85% of the guests. Outside the dining room, I am as well or better dressed as 95% of the guests. It is how you feel comfortable. The only "enforcement" I have ever seen is no shorts or ripped jeans in the dining room....

You have apparently never tried wearing a chiffon skirt on a windy deck  :D

No and I have no Scottish or Irish heritage so I can't even where a kilt on formal night! Although I have seen fellow cruisers wearing kilts on formal night.
