Van taxies in HI?

We were originally considering renting a van at each port in HI but now with the price of gas we thought we might just use taxies. Our problem is that there are 6 of us travelling together. In most of the Carribean there have always been vans as well as sedans used as taxis. Are there van taxies in Hawaii?

We just came back from Hawaii a couple of days ago, from a cruise on NCL Wind.

In most places we booked rental vans and got really good prices. Alamo had $40/day in many places. The price of gas was around $3, and the most we paid was in Maui on the road to Hana, at $3.24. After hurrican Katrina, we saw in CNN news that some places on the US mainland had prices of >$4/gallon, but in Hawaii, the prices did not seem to go up very much. On Sat.-Sun. Sept. 3-4, the prices in Oahu (we drove many places in Oahu) were mostly $2.95.

If you are only going very short distances then you may try a van taxi, and risk not getting one. Booking a rental van might be the safer bet.
