springs741 Posted March 27, 2015 #2 Share Posted March 27, 2015 I hate to burst your bubble, but if you want a balcony I suggest you call Carnival and pay the difference. I have sailed nine times since 2011 and never had an upsell/upgrade. I have friends that are platinum almost diamond that book insides and cruise 6 times a year and they have never received an upsell much less an upgrade. dogchopper Posted March 27, 2015 #5 Share Posted March 27, 2015 I didn't get a free upgrade but I did get a call with a decent upgrade to a balcony .. Cheaper than if I just booked it myself .. This was my first upgrade offer call.. I'd sure love to get a free upgrade but I doubt it will ever happen.
Rare Cruisegirl6 Posted March 27, 2015 #6 Share Posted March 27, 2015 The balconies are very very small, smallest of all cruise line its ok not to have one trust me, your not out there for long at all.
nator555 Posted March 27, 2015 Author #7 Share Posted March 27, 2015 I goofed...I was referring to a upsell call not a upgrade. Right now if I upgraded to a balcony room it will be a extra $250. I kick myself in the butt for not taking Carnivals flash sale offer the other day. That would of cost me a extra $180 for the balcony. I would really love to fall asleep with the balcony door open. The sound of ocean waves is heavenly! Decisions decisions...balcony or extra spending money?
SunshineDancer Posted March 27, 2015 #8 Share Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) This is my first cruise, so I don't know if this is normal... but they just called me today and offered me an ocean suite for an extra $340 total cost (7 day cruise), which includes VIP embark. My cruise leaves in 3 weeks. I was booked in a regular balcony with 3 passengers... and decided to take the upgrade. I'm hoping it was the right choice, but it seemed like a good deal to me! :) There's nearly 100 more square feet and the balcony is about twice as long. Especially since I no longer needed the Faster To The Fun ($50) that I had purchased and was able to cancel, and didn't need one of my airport transfers ($90), it really only cost me an extra couple hundred bucks... yay! Rare aubreyc1988 Posted March 27, 2015 #13 Share Posted March 27, 2015 have never received a call, on any line I've been in Insides, Oceanviews, Balconys, Mini Suites Usually if I want to upgrade, I wait until after final payment when some price drops happen. But lately I just am ok with an inside room - I'll use that money elsewhere and if I want to see the ocean, I'll go out on a public deck but I digress - I would be surprised if you got an upgrade call - it could happen, but still might not be the best deal and there has to be a reason why they are offering it - try to negotiate with them! Rare aubreyc1988 Posted March 30, 2015 #16 Share Posted March 30, 2015 :-) after final payment, price drops happen. So lets say you paid 600 for an inside room. after final payment, the price for a balcony comes to 599.00 - Call the cruiseline and they will upgrade you to the balcony, since you paid 600.00 for the inside and the balcony went below that. Now, I know they are not OBLIGATED to do that for you, but MOST of the time they move you up. Or lets say you paid 600.00 for the inside, and after final payment, the suite you were eyeing that WAS at 2,000 went down to 1,300. You can pay the difference and upgrade! I've gotten some pretty *suite* deals by using this method!
sillychicky Posted March 30, 2015 #17 Share Posted March 30, 2015 I called my PVP after booking through the casino offer and getting an almost free Ocean View room coming up in May. I asked if they might offer the balcony since they had offered some on the casino deal but there weren't any left at that rate when I booked. He told me they offer the up-sell based on how much you paid and since I paid so little they wouldn't offer that most likely. So, it almost sounded like if you are among the highest paying cruisers for your stateroom class you might get an up-sell. That being said, OV or Balcony doesn't really matter for a Caribbean cruise. My Alaska cruise in June is balcony though since there's sooo much more to see from the balcony. It's a nice luxury but not necessary.
mickey26 Posted March 30, 2015 #18 Share Posted March 30, 2015 We are also sailing on May 17th and received our upgrade call last Tuesday! This will be our 5th Carnival cruise--all on the Pride! cutiepiefred Posted March 30, 2015 #20 Share Posted March 30, 2015 we have never gotten a call for a upgrade or upsell, we normally book the rooms we want anyway since we want rooms next to each other. so even if we did I dont think we would take it unless it was a really deal

jiggs Posted March 30, 2015 #22 Share Posted March 30, 2015 I've been called serval times and it varies, but it is usually within a couple weeks of sailing when they are trying to ensure that the higher value cabins don't sail empty. I had a long chat with the guy who I spoke to last. The list of people he calls is generated by the finance department and he just works the list...some people will also get an email asking them to call if they're interested. This guy was responsible for just one ship. Deals are varied based on how much the person paid for their initial booking, so don't be like 'oh I'd take that offer' as it varies from person to person. as an aside, if you're really interested you can call the upsell fairy yourself, but if your name is not on their list, it may do you no good.
