Walking around Galveston

I will be sailing from Galveston next month. I know the transfers get you to the port early, but can you leave your bags and go outside the gate to explore?

There is a lot to do around the port within walking distance from terminals. And much more with a cab.

These are available to walk to except WWII submarine and destroyer.
