DonRobertoSanJuan Posted April 6, 2015 #1 Share Posted April 6, 2015 Does Ketchikan have any rental car agencies, other than at the airport? What would be an interesting (scenic) drive for a half day (morning) in the area? We had booked a crab fishing tour, but DW has second thoughts...

parson33 Posted April 6, 2015 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2015 This looks promising for renting cars: http://www.akcarrental.com/index.html However, I am also curious on people's ideas for a half day trip somewhere near Ketchikan.
Budget Queen Posted April 6, 2015 #4 Share Posted April 6, 2015 (edited) I use Alaska Car rental. I have areas I like to drive to, and enjoy some trails. Herring Cove, is sometimes mentioned for bears, but it's private property and I haven't had a lot of sightings there. It's easy to stop at Saxman Village- superior with a guide, which, in the past, could be picked up at the gift shop. This is the south end of town. North, Totem Bight is popular, and further to "end of road" area, also Ward Lake, Walmart. http://www.visit-ketchikan.com and take out Alaska travel books from your library. mapleleaves Posted April 6, 2015 #5 Share Posted April 6, 2015 (edited) Nearly every town has a web site to support their community ( and local vendors). Many will send a free visitor guide! Google the townname with 'visitor information' or 'Chamber of Commerce' and you'll find the official town site such as this one: http://www.visit-ketchikan.com/Getting-Around-Ketchikan/Rental-Cars.aspx or this site from a local: http://www.experienceketchikan.com/things-to-do-in-alaska.html Edited April 6, 2015 by mapleleaves
judynorth Posted April 6, 2015 #6 Share Posted April 6, 2015 Ketchikan is a great place to use public transportation. On our last visit we took the bus to Totem Bight Park and walked the trail there. We even chanced upon a tour and listened to some of the guide's stories. We gave a donation for the free hot chocolate at the visitor center and then caught the bus back to town. It was a bonus that the bus driver was a great tour guide. The rest of the time in Ketchikan we walked around town, visited Creek Street, and took the funicular up to Fox Lodge. All in all, it was a great day and very inexpensive.
