dakotahrb Posted May 23, 2015 #1 Share Posted May 23, 2015 Are there any beaches with a bar on it or near in within walking distance of the port? Are there any activities you suggest for my older teens 17-18?

c-leg5 Posted May 23, 2015 #5 Share Posted May 23, 2015 Puerta maya There are no "nice" beaches in the area as the coastline is mainly iron shore. However I understand there is a small beach area with bar at the port (never docked at Puerta Maya). Within walking distance ( north towards town) you have El Cid or Park Royal hotels which offer day passes with snorkeling and pools, or slightly further Sunset Beach, with Sand Dollar Sports activities or La Palapita recently discussed on here. Better beaches and activities are a $10-15 taxi ride each way for 4, south at beach bars like Mr Sanchos or Paradise Beach, both discussed regularly on here. Rare crewsweeper Posted May 24, 2015 #6 Share Posted May 24, 2015 (edited) There are 2 bars at the end of the pier, beginning of the shopping area in Puerta Maya, 3 Amigos on one side and Fat Tuesday's on the other. The small beach to the right of Fat Tuesday's is used frequently, but there are no facilities, like changing rooms or showers, no water toys. There are kiosks along the shopping area and recently an "underwater bar"--looks like a big aquarium--was opened. In addition to the previously mentioned places, there is an outlet for Los Cinco Soles and it's restaurant Pancho's Backyard, which has a patio facing the beach and the pier. For you teens, I'd recommend spending the nominal cab fare and hitting Paradise Beach or Mr. Sanchos. Low or no entrance fees (some minimal $10pp purchases of food and/or drink requested) for loungers and beach. Small charge for use of watertoys. Both have websites and lots of information on these boards. Edited May 24, 2015 by crewsweeper
bankofdad Posted May 26, 2015 #7 Share Posted May 26, 2015 Money Bar is a great option, too, but it is a short $8 cab ride each way from the pier. We did this last year with our 18 and 13 yo kids and they loved it. The reef right in front of Money Bar is actually quite nice, especially if your not extremely experienced. Access from the shore or step right at the pier in front. They have a kiosk that rents all the gear and also can set up other activities like jet skis and parasailing. They have tables with chairs and loungers as well. The food was very good, drinks aplenty and the prices were VERY reasonable IMHO. Search the forums here and google for their website. Lots of information out there.
