cokies Posted July 28, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We are spending 3 days in Rome before our October 2nd cruise. What is the best way to travel from the city to our cruise port? Appreciate any tips or advice😊😊😊
Dick in Falls Church Posted July 28, 2015 #2 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Go to your roll call and see if anyone is arranging a bus or van from Rome to the port. Otherwise, it can be done by train or private limo.
CathyCruises Posted July 28, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Dick is absolutely correct. The best way is to join with others on your rollcall for a shared van, which usually averages about €25 per person. Yes, you can take the train, but it's cumbersome with your luggage. You have to be able to load it onto the train, and once you get to Civitavecchia, you may very well have to carry it down a flight of stairs, through a tunnel, and up on the other side. Then you have to take a bus about 1 mile to the port shuttle bus, and then to your ship, all of which requires a lot of luggage movement. Private transport will cost you in the vicinity of €125. jayoldschool Posted July 28, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We prebooked the high speed train for 11€ for two online, then took a cab directly from the station to the ship for 20€.
Mr. Click Posted July 28, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We used our roll call to form a group to go from Rome to the port and then from the ship back to the airport. We had 6 from Rome --two different hotels that were close to each other--and 8 from the ship to the airport. We used Rome Cabs and Stefano and his drivers were extremely helpful. smdubowsky Posted July 28, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Last year we did the same thing. We stayed in Rome for 3 days before we boarded the Equinox. We splurged and took a Mercedes Limo. The total cost was about 120 euros for the two of us. The ride takes about an hour and it was worth it.
americandream Posted July 28, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2015 A few years ago we booked a private car through our TA. It was a nice ride. I don't remember the exact cost, but somewhere slightly north of 100 Euros sounds about right.
Jerzy Traveler Posted July 28, 2015 #8 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We booked Civitavecchia Shuttle. 75euro for 2. You might share a van but we got a private Mercedes with a great driver. Picked up at our hotel and brought right to the ship.
cadburysmom Posted July 28, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Here's another vote to check your roll call for a shared van. Much less hassle than the train plus it's always nice to get to meet fellow passengers before the cruise and share the excitement of arriving at the port together.:)
surebeatssailing Posted July 28, 2015 #10 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We used Bob's Limos in Rome. Just google & it will give you the website for contact. You sign up for a shared shuttle from Rome to the cruise port & they arrange the pickups of others going from Rome hotels to the port. We paid 75E for both of us. The owner is actually from Ohio! Rare ladylemondrop Posted July 28, 2015 #11 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Another vote here for Bobs Limos, or Romecabs, both excellent reliable and good value. Try to share with others from your roll call as suggested.
JohninDC Posted July 28, 2015 #12 Share Posted July 28, 2015 (edited) The slow train a couple of years ago was about 5 euros each and took about an hour; from the train station it was a 10 minute walk to the port entrance where a bus took you to the ship. The Italy ports board will have more current info. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=595 Edited July 28, 2015 by JohninDC

shainky84 Posted July 28, 2015 #14 Share Posted July 28, 2015 I am doing the same thing next summer. Very helpful tips. Thanks all! Enjoy your vacation cokies!
CathyCruises Posted July 28, 2015 #15 Share Posted July 28, 2015 They've moved the port entrance due to construction. It's a hefty walk with all your luggage. Yes, it's now about a mile from the train station to the port shuttle pick up spot. There is a bus that you can take for €.8, then you have to take your luggage off of that bus and load it onto the porch shuttle bus. So while it may be the least expensive option it is also the most cumbersome. Someone mentioned taking a cab from the station; yes that's possible, but in many trips to the train station I don't think I have ever actually seen a cab looking for a fare. I am a committed DIYer but that's too much schlepping even for me, and we travel on the light side.
gacruisergal Posted July 28, 2015 #16 Share Posted July 28, 2015 You are on vacation, why hassle with luggage when Rome Cabs is the absolute best............Mercedes comfort and a very reliable driver who handles all your luggage from start to finish. On our last trip we had a woman driver and she was great and answered our many questions about the Italian countryside. You will be picked up at the airport or hotel and dropped off directly at the ship. Stefano is the owner and will answer your questions regarding charges. Don't forget to tip your driver generously... We have always shared with Cruise Critic members.
jjk9946 Posted July 28, 2015 #17 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We used Rome in Limo with four or five other couples off our roll call. Great service, good price. We used them for four tours also while in Rome. Ball were amazing except for Rome at Night. (Hint: it's dark!) Judy
TroubleT Posted July 28, 2015 #18 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Another vote for Bobs Limos! We used them in June for our transfer from Civi to FCO and we'll be using them next year again. Someone mentioned: it is American owned company - expect an excellent service! I personally would never take a train. Like one wise man on CruiseCritic said: "I'd rather do more EURO and less cardio!":)

tartana Posted July 28, 2015 #20 Share Posted July 28, 2015 I recently used Rome Cabs Bookings for 2 Rome/Civitavecchia transfers - excellent and very affordable - we booked the shared shuttle transfer to the airport and lucked out with the van all to ourselves :)
celebritydave Posted July 28, 2015 #21 Share Posted July 28, 2015 Another vote for Romeinlimo. We have used them multiple time, the drivers are friendly and the Mercedes vans are always nice and clean. We have used them for tours in Rome and they do that very well to. luv2cruisecats Posted July 28, 2015 #22 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We have done this 3 times now and each time used roll call contacts to hook up with others. If you have 8 people (about the max with luggage space limits) it should run $25 to $30 per person and is much better than paying $130 to $160 for 2 people...plus driver tip. dmk Posted July 28, 2015 #23 Share Posted July 28, 2015 We have used RomeCabs a few times. This time we asked if we could have a discount as repeat customers. Absolutely. they gave us a discount. Thanks, Rome Cabs!:) You're the best!
