Host Walt Posted August 31, 2015 #3 Share Posted August 31, 2015 We are going on our 1st Cruise 9/13/15 Royal Caribbean Independence of the Sea.... HELP! Already nervous about cruising - sea sickness, all the walking just had knee surgery recently. My wife has a meniscus problem. We discussed the same issue with the surgeon because cruising on a large ship like the Independence will involve a whole lot of walking. Sea sickness, on the other hand, shouldn't be a problem. There is very little lateral movement on the Independence. However if seasickness is a concern, you should check with your family doctor about how you should handle it if it should occur. Host Walt Posted August 31, 2015 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2015 That's what I have left knee a meniscus problem. How did she handle the walking? We used a manual, fold up wheelchair in airports and on board when we had substantial lateral distances to cover. We were on a large Princess ship (3,000+ pax) so we studied the deck plans and made sure we were located near a central elevator that was close to the dining room and other activities. The show room was a problem distance wise but otherwise she did very well by walking slowly and carefully. She carried a fold up cane in a bag slung around her shoulder for the first day or two but found it to be a bother. We also had a letter from the Orthopedic Surgeon that provided info for the ship's doctor if/when she had any significant pain or physical issues with her knee. Finally she wore a knee brace that served more to advertise her infirmity than to provide any substantial support so that she could get help boarding and disembarking tenders, buses, etc. We had an excellent experience and she came through with flying colors. dorisis Posted August 31, 2015 #7 Share Posted August 31, 2015 You could go to dinner and a night club. A few years ago we went to a Flamenco show at the hotel El Convento. I think there are also casinos in san Juan and there will be other excursions offered by the ship.
griffy116 Posted September 8, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 8, 2015 We also utilized cabs. When others would say, "can easily be walked" we knew that it might not be easy for some of our group. We felt the small expense was well worth it. San Juan has some uneven surfaces and hills. Make it easy and you'll enjoy it better. San Juan even had a casino in the hotel we used for our pre-cruise stay in San Juan. Old San Juan has plenty of things to do. Check the San Juan board for other ideas. The food is FABULOUS! SuperdudeAbides Posted September 8, 2015 #9 Share Posted September 8, 2015 My Wife and I spent 4 days in Old San Juan in October of 2014. It's really a fun place to visit! Right at the port, where the cruise ships dock there are a few restaurants (and hotels) as well as bars and some shopping. I mean RIGHT THERE (across the street from the port). Senior Frogs, Harley, there is a hotel with a fabulous burger joint, casino. Cabs stack up there when ships dock, you'll have ample opportunity to get away from the immediate area. There are a lot of options close (but perhaps too far for you to walk) in the hills leading to the other side of Old San Juan you have a lot of the more local flavor stuff, some cute little bars shops and restaurants. There is the shopping district, the old fort, lots to see. OH there are tour buses too that are free (if you can find room on one) they run pretty regularly on the weekends and a bit more sparsely on weekdays. But you should rest assured you will be able to get where you want to go.

I'm sure there are some new cruisers who would be interested in hearing what you have to say!
PreciousCruiser Posted September 16, 2015 #13 Share Posted September 16, 2015 Wow... I must have been tired when I read the OP's post. I didn't read it closely. Cruise started 9/13 & in PR in evening! Will read posts closer in future. Hope OP has a great cruise! As far as evening in PR, we just walked around Old SJ, ate at a restaurant (not sure which one), and went to 2 different festivals that were going on when there (2 diff. trips).
