Rome Airport to Citiciveccia Port on the Train

Sorry.... Civitavecchia!

Please can anyone advise how easy/hard it is to take the train from Rome Airport to the port with one large suitcase and a carry on.

I understand there is one change of train in Rome...... Is it an easy change of platform?

Do you have to climb stairs or is there a lift?

It would be around 1pm on a weekday.

Any advice welcome we are seniors but very fit, and travelling the day before our cruise departs in October.

You can either take Leonardo Express to Roma Termini and then the regional train to Civitavecchia. The change is easy and trains should be at the same platform.

Or you take the regional train to Roma Trastevere and change to the regional train to Civitavecchia. Also easy change, no stairs, no change of platform.

But... in Civitavecchia there are two flights of stairs, no elevator. And from the train station to the shuttle bus parking lot it´s about 2 km or 20 min walking unless you take a bus (either public or special shuttle bus). So you definitely have to take two busses to get to your ship.

Or you take a cab from Civitavecchia train station to the cruise terminal.

We just did this last week - having done it many other times before and we think it's really easy to do.

You catch the train from the station which is attached to the airport. There are only a few platforms and all on the same level. You will need to change in Roma Trastevere and the journey there takes about half an hour.

At Trastevere there are about 6 platforms but there are signs above the Fiumicino and the Civitavecchia platforms. They are on different tracks so you will have to change platforms which could involve having to use stairs - there is a lift/elevator but we've know it to not be working sometimes. The train to Civitavecchia takes around an hour, depending on which one you get.

The trains run frequently and you can look up the timetables here http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en Just type in From fiumicino to civitavecchia and you can see the train times, and details of the change at Trastevere

Sorry but need to point out a couple of things re the above post.

There is definitely a change involving stairs (or a lift) at Trastevere - The trains do not share a common platform and the platforms have permanent signs above them. We did it on the way out and the way back and had to change platforms (and use the stairs) both times.

In all the times we have arrived by train into Civitavecchia the train has always stopped on the platform closest to the station building which did not involve stairs. However, the journey back into Rome will involve stairs.

As for getting a cab in Civitavecchia, I really would not suggest this as an option as there are just so few taxis around that we have rarely - if ever - seen a cab outside the station and we've been there many times.

There is now a bus which runs until around 7.30pm and costs 0.8 euros and runs from the station to the port bus so if you are arriving on the day of the cruise, or staying at the Hotel Traghetto which is right by the port bus stop, this would be an easier option than walking.

You might search for more info on the Italy Ports board: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=595

We did the train rom downtown Rome a few years ago - the walk from the train station to the port entrance, where you catch the bus to your ship, took about 10-15 minutes (but I was younger then :o).

Sorry to say but the port bus no longer stops by the Castle but much further in town and it is quite a big terminus now for all ships and ferries.

A much longer walk but there is a shuttle bus outside the train station which will take you there.

We took the train three weeks ago.

As already mentioned - yes, there are stairs involved. When changing trains and also in Civityvecchia.

Depending which hotel you book in Civitavecchia it is very easy to walk to the hotel. We can recommend the San Giorgio and the Hotel De La Ville. Both are right at the end of the train station´s parking lot - not even two minutes walk.

More than walking the stairs in the train stations we found finding seats with room for our luggage in the train itself to be a problem. We had to stack all our suitcases on top of each other on on seat.

If you arrive in the morning http://www.civitatours.com might be an alternative. They offer transfers for Euro 20 pp to and from Civitavecchia. We have used them 4 times now to get to the airport after the cruise. Because of our flight times we never used them the other way around - however. I dare to say it is just as convenient and easy as their transfer to the airport.

Safe travels!

Hi. We have used the train in Civitavecchia a few times and we have always had to go down stairs and back up dragging luggage. Also, you are more likely to get a seat if you board at Termini. At Termini, if you book the Frecce train, you can reserve a seat and will depart from the regular platform. If you are using the regional train, it will be on a further platform, 25-29, which involves a 400m walk along the end platform, 24, to the Civitavecchia train. Ken [l may be one out on the platform numbers].
