Rome Rail Transfers

Has anyone used the train to transfer from Rome to the port? I see in the rail schedules frequent service from Rome to Civitavecchia. We will already have Italian rail passes, so it makes sense versus the cost of the private cars or bus.

Civitavecchia rail station is not far from the cruise terminal. There is a shutle from the entrance of the port to the ships but there is not from train station to port entrance.

The distance form rail station to port entrance is short and an agreable walk to do on foot if you had no luggage. In other case, you may take a taxi in the rail station which ride will cost you only a few euros.

Train + taxi is very cheap vs. transfers.

After reading a "gazillion" conflicting posts on this topic, BF and I decided to save our euros and travel with the locals (being from the DC metro area, train travel isn't as unerving for us as it is for some). We arrived in Civitaveccia around 1:00 and found plenty of taxis that were willing to take us directly to the ship for 20 euros, no problem. We probably could have continued on our own to find the free shuttle or walked it ourselves (yikes ... that would have been a hike) but I think the cab fare was money well spent.

On the way back, however, we picked up the free shuttle from the cruise ship. It dropped us off at the edge of the port, and it was a nice trek (what would have been a short walk without luggage) to the train station.

We had plenty of company both arriving and departing, so getting lost wasn't an issue. If you're young-ish and in good health and don't have more luggage than you can carry or wheel yourself, you'll be fine. Enjoy!
