BobKat406 Posted October 1, 2015 #1 Share Posted October 1, 2015 Did anyone cruise out of Bayonne during Irene/Sandy and park their car their? Any issues with flooding problems and car damage? Going out Saturday and with the track of Joaquin unknown, not sure whether to continue with out plan to park at the port or do something else.:(
Rare mking8288 Posted October 1, 2015 #2 Share Posted October 1, 2015 During SS Sandy (2012) - cruisers at Cape Liberty, NJ and also Brooklyn Terminal in NY had damages to their parked vehicle due to storm surges, cars were flooded & most written off as salvage. If you search old threads/discussion - they should come up - vehicles parked on the pier's parking lots weren't elevated & I haven't read anything different about preparations for future storms at these ports, no sea walls or barriers, etc. or higher grounds for the vehicles to be relocated to in a hurry. MCT in Manhattan had rooftop parking (hence, another reason for it being "expensive") so vehicles were safe & secured there, despite the terminal losing power & damaged. It appeared that this weekend's storm won't be a direct "hit" toward NYC based on latest storm tracks & forecast models, but I would consider having plan C in addition to plan B. Check your auto insurance for coverage - cars released afterward had to be towed away from the piers as they cannot be safely driven away (even if they managed to dry out the electronics & start the engine, etc.) due to the salty sea waters. The lot operators were not liable and their obligations were to "assist" car owners in filing out their own personal insurance claims, etc.
138east Posted October 1, 2015 #3 Share Posted October 1, 2015 Another thread about Hurricaine concerns and Cape Liberty Parking - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2264964 Bottom line - if you're worried, park offsite and pay to get to and from the port.
