merle65 Posted January 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 9, 2016 Hi, We are going to rent cars from each island and I was thinking of bringing my own Garmin GPS to keep the cost down on the rentals. Is this a good idea?who takes their own gps.Do the gps on cell phones work good for getting around on the islands?
coyboy1971 Posted January 10, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2016 I live on the Big Island. My Verizon iPhone GPS works great 90% of the time.
weathermom Posted January 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 10, 2016 We have brought our own gps several times to Hawaii ...it worked great on all the islands & we didn't need to worry about cell coverage which can be spotty at times elspecially near the various mountains. mtwingcpa Posted January 10, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 10, 2016 I took my Garmin GPS to Hawaii about 3 years ago and it worked fine. Naturally, you've got to make sure that Hawaii is included in the map that you have loaded on your unit. I mention this because the entire US map will no longer fit on my unit, so I have to specify a western US subset.
