TandK0826 Posted January 12, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2016 This is our first time on Norwegian. Normally we cruise with Royal Caribbean. I have a question about using cash to pay your on board expenses. With Royal, we never had to pay upfront for the account. We just paid off the account at the end. How does Norwegian work? Do you have to deposit money first or do they do the same as Royal where you just use and pay at the end? Thanks!

casofilia Posted January 12, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2016 You will find that you have to deposit at the start of the cruise and remain "in the black". If you try to go "into the red" then your account will be frozen till you add more cash. Just like a bank account with no overdraft facility. Cash/Traveler's Checks Procedures You can deposit cash or US Traveler's Checks into your onboard account. A cash deposit may be placed on your account in the following amounts: 7 day cruises - $300/person Less than 7 days - $150/person More than 7 days - $450/person Once you have exceeded the deposited amount, your account will be closed to further charges. You can deposit as much money as often as you'd like throughout the cruise, however, refunds cannot be made until the day of disembarkation for any excess. US Traveler's Checks can be cashed onboard and are the same as cash. **Personal checks will not be accepted, nor can they be cashed onboard. Rare KeithJenner Posted January 12, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2016 An option is to use a credit card to open your account and then to go to guest services to pay cash against the balance owing. That way has the benefit of ensuring that your account will never get blocked due to spending all the cash you have paid in.
mom23krzkidz Posted January 12, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2016 We just took our first cruise and did a cash account. It was easy, we went to guest services immediately after boarding, set up the account, they let us put down whatever amount we wanted, but we did the recommended amount. The last night we asked about settling the account and we were given three options...cash out last night all (no more charging) or some of the account, cash out with long lines morning of disembarking, or wait for a check. We decided to wait for a check. We had plenty of cash from casino winnings, so we decided we didn't need more on hand.
