az4ship Posted March 26, 2016 #26 Share Posted March 26, 2016 I am not changing my plans. You always should be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are traveling. It is a personal decision on whether you go or not but I will go to Europe this year. Also the state department puts these out for all types of situations. I always register with there STEP program even if I go to the Caribbean
LondonTowner Posted March 26, 2016 #27 Share Posted March 26, 2016 Yes, that info is interesting. The reason that UK is so high because of IRA bombings that never stopped me going anywhere and I live in central London. If you Google something like ' most dangerous countries in the world' no European country comes near the US. Out of interest I looked at what the British government tells us about travel to US. The same things about travelling anywhere in Europe that there are risks of terrorist attacks and also high risk from drug gangs and drug related incidents in certain states. Nowhere in the world is safe these days and for that reason will continue to travel to places that we want to see.
FreestyleNovice Posted March 26, 2016 #28 Share Posted March 26, 2016 Talking IRA; along with the Spanish ETA, Roter Armee Fraktion and some more the 70's and 80's in Western Europe were more bloody than recent years.

campolady Posted March 27, 2016 #30 Share Posted March 27, 2016 I have just had an email from a friend in the US asking if it is true that armed police are patrolling the streets of every town and city in Europe and are we frightened of going out? NO!!! Life goes on as usual with no noticeable increased police presence and no sense of fear. Please don't change your plans, observe the same awareness as you would be in any US city and have a wonderful trip.

campolady Posted March 27, 2016 #34 Share Posted March 27, 2016 Personally I would hope there was increased Police presence. Certainly has been in London. If you had read my post correctly you would have seen that I put <<no noticeable increased police presence>>. I am sure that there are a lot more officials patrolling but not uniformed or standing on street corners toting guns.
moniquet Posted March 27, 2016 #35 Share Posted March 27, 2016 You should have said that then, we aren't mind readers:rolleyes: extra Police in London and airports are very visible.

I think you friend must not know much about geography.....don't they realize how many countries are on the continent of Europe and how many cities and towns are in each country? I am thinking maybe some of the larger cities may have a larger police presence right now, but every town? I wouldn't think so. I have a river cruise booked week after next and no way am I staying home. Each one of us has to do what is most comfortable for ourselves but I am taking my river cruise:) Edited March 27, 2016 by Lois R
angeleyes27 Posted April 22, 2016 #37 Share Posted April 22, 2016 I cancelled my trip in May to Spain, France and Italy and decided to go to Poland and Czech Republic. I thought they would be a little less out of the mainstream. I would prefer to stay off all trains but I don't see much alternative to the overnight trains between Prague and Kraków as well as the overnight train between Kraków and Vienna. We did find one flight that was $1100 for 2 vs the $106 on the train. Any ideas?
Rare Lois R Posted April 22, 2016 #38 Share Posted April 22, 2016 I have been home a week from my first River Cruise.....it was in my top 3 cruises ever:D.....I sailed from Amsterdam all around the Netherlands and Belgium. I felt fine and would go again tomorrow if it was possible.;),,........I LOVED IT:)
Bob++ Posted April 22, 2016 #39 Share Posted April 22, 2016 We did a Mediterranean cruise just after the revolution in Egypt. Many people on our ship opted to use the bus tours, escorted by military police. We booked a private car with a guide and a driver and an overnight stay near the pyramids. We never felt in the least bit unsafe, even in Tahrir Square going to the Museum, with the burned out remains of the building next door. I was a truly memorable trip and such a shame that things have got so bad there that cruise ships stopped going.
moniquet Posted May 1, 2016 #40 Share Posted May 1, 2016 Just back from Nice. Not just Police in and out of the airport but the army inside the Terminal especially by the check in desks. Reassuring but scary too as it brings back Brussels in the mind. We travel to Nice every year at this time and flights are usually almost full. This year only about a quarter full both ways. This year only about a quarter full both ways.Although it's always worth remembering that data is not the plural of anecdote. You'd need much more information, and from reliable sources, to work out whether there has actually been any reduction in traffic.

newport dave Posted May 1, 2016 #43 Share Posted May 1, 2016 Currently in Geneva which borders France and has a large UN presence. angeleyes27 Posted May 1, 2016 #44 Share Posted May 1, 2016 I was in Rome right after a bombing and there were army guys with machine guns there. I was reassured that no one was going to try anything and I felt safe at that time. I know when I have asked before about the security, sometimes people got angry but it reassures me. We are headed to Europe in July
