MaiTaiMary Posted March 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2016 We are going to be on the Breeze in September and would love to check out Cucina Del Capitano. Two questions: -what is a favorite dinner dish? -I see there is a $5 fee for kids (instead of $15 for adults). Is there a separate kids menu? If so, can somebody post? Thanks. Any other thoughts on this restaurant? :)

Any other thoughts on this restaurant? :) I know it seems odd but the steak was actually quite good. Bistecca alla Griglia* Italian Expression of the Classic New York Sirloin Steak, Seared and Served with Grilled Tomato, Pearl Onions, Garlic Confit, Fried Thyme and Parsley Also quite good is Spaghetti Carbonara One of Our Most Highly Requested Dishes, First Served by Carnival Nearly 40 Years Ago Aboard the TSS Mardi Gras in the Flamingo Dining Room – Spaghetti al Dente Tossed with Cream, Diced Pancetta Bacon, Onion and Garlic, Served with Fried Oregano and Shaved Parmesan Cheese And of course both the Nonna’s meatballs (Grandma’s Recipe) Hand made with Olive Oil Sautéed Garlic and Onion, Baked with Fresh Mozzarella, Served over the Captains sauce and Il Capitano’s Signature Arancini Fried Risotto Balls, Piled High with Baby Arugula and Shaved Parmesan Cheese, Served over tomato sauce Are good app's Don't recall a kids menu per se, I think my kids ordered off the main menu, maybe there was a shortened menu for kids. Zydacruiser has an older pic of one on this page, Scroll down and you will see it. http://zydecocruiser.net/carnivalmagic/Menus_Other/index.htm Short version is: Meatball Spaghetti Fried Chicken Tenders Fish Fingers Mac-N-Cheese Cannoli Edited March 26, 2016 by Trumpster
MaiTaiMary Posted March 26, 2016 Author #3 Share Posted March 26, 2016 Thank you! Good grief, my kids wouldn't be happy with that. I'm assuming I can just pay $15 each and have them order off of the adult menu.
Trumpster Posted March 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted March 26, 2016 We are planning to go twice on our cruise in 3 weeks or so. First night, for the free wine offer and because the kids like it. The pasta bar at lunch is free and also a favorite, its between this and Tandoor as to which is the go to place. Kids prefer cucina.

I'm assuming I can just pay $15 each and have them order off of the adult menu. I think they can order off the Adult or main menu for the same price as $5, I could be wrong, been wrong before. I don't recall them eating any of that. FWIW, the buffet is right down a staircase and worse case is to bring the kids up something while you eat. KPfromCT Posted March 26, 2016 #7 Share Posted March 26, 2016 Nonna's meatballs with spaghetti. To DIE for.:D:D We had a party of 8, so they brought us out every single appetizer to share with the table. Chicken parm was a HUGE hit too. HUGE portion size!!! Had the cannolis for dessert. YUM!!!! Enjoy! We found it WELL worth the $15.00 pp upcharge.

I'm sure they'd prefer Calamari or Antipasti over buffet food. :) I was just wondering if the kid's menu had something different. $15 isn't very much. We'll just pay that (if necessary) for the adult menu.
Rare Cruisegirl6 Posted March 26, 2016 #9 Share Posted March 26, 2016 I have to be gluten free so can't have the meatballs full of filler/breadcrumbs....do they offer gluten free pasta?
Riley's Mom Posted March 26, 2016 #10 Share Posted March 26, 2016 I order the Short Ribs one night and the Steak another night. Then I will usually order the Carbonara the third night. Yes we love it so much that on a 7 night cruise we eat at Cucina 3 nights. We also eat at the steakhouse one night. In my opinion, the food and service and worth the upcharge . And the Tiramisu and Lemon Sorbeto. Are to die for!!!
noelbows Posted March 26, 2016 #11 Share Posted March 26, 2016 I have to be gluten free so can't have the meatballs full of filler/breadcrumbs....do they offer gluten free pasta? Yes, they do have gluten free pasta. My sister had it at the pasta bar on the Dream on 1/31. She said it was acceptable, but not that good. At least not compared to the good stuff available nowadays. evandbob Posted March 26, 2016 #12 Share Posted March 26, 2016 (edited) I enjoyed the antipasto, my favorite part of the Cucina meal. I had linguini and meat balls for the main course, and it was okay, but the sauce was very sweet. It wasn't Bronx gravy the way my Grandma used to make hers, and I commented, not bad, but if this was a restaurant on Arthur Avenue (Italian section of the Bronx), it wouldn't last a month. For anyone who couldn't distinguish between sauce and gravy, this would be a very nice place to eat. Edited March 26, 2016 by evandbob

Short Ribs are also good and DH loved the steak. We wish more ships had it!
SeaScout Posted March 27, 2016 #16 Share Posted March 27, 2016 Had the chicken Parmesan the last time we were there. Was not good. Chicken was tough and reminded me of pre-breaded frozen chicken. I can make better at home.
Bases5 Posted March 27, 2016 #17 Share Posted March 27, 2016 In our opinion its a much better value than the steak house. We agree the steak is very good.

Trumpster Posted March 27, 2016 #19 Share Posted March 27, 2016 Definitely on Carnival the upcharge restaurants are way better than the ones included in your cruise fare. Well yes, but I'm not sure I would agree with the definitive way you put it. If you were talking NCL then sure the "way" better would apply. But lots of good MDR meals as well as a few free lunch places really rock. Atmosphere and less crowds clearly favor the for pay specialities. crusinpsychRN Posted June 20, 2016 #24 Share Posted June 20, 2016 (edited) So many good things on the menu, might have to eat there several times. Lunch portions were huge! I found it odd they didn't have spoons. I asked why and one of the cook's said he didn't like to see them used. Talked to a manager and he said "Oh, good idea." He had spoons set out. Do NY Italians eat with spoons to twirl? Edited June 20, 2016 by crusinpsychRN
