cruiseguy1016 Posted March 27, 2016 #27 Share Posted March 27, 2016 The embarkation port us not by the Sheraton. The ship's emark from the Pan American port and no hotels right there. I also always fly in the day before and will do so in January. While the ship's leave late, San Juan is on Atlantic time an hour later than the east coast. I do remember one time when we were 4 hrs late and felt for the people cruising that day. I think they made their cruises but who needs the headache. There are two Sheraton's near the port. One is the Sheraton Old San Juan. That one is across the street from the Old San Juan docks. Those are NOT the docks that AOS embarks from. There is also the Sheraton Puerto Rico and Casino, also called the Sheraton Convention Center. THAT Sheraton is very close to the Pan American Pier which is where AOS embarks from. sbbquilter Posted March 27, 2016 #28 Share Posted March 27, 2016 Due to the late departure time we flew in on departure day - had plenty of time as the taxi ride was quick and easy. We did not have to wait for baggage at the airport as we had packed in carry on only. Have a great cruise.
Wilson Posted March 27, 2016 #29 Share Posted March 27, 2016 Last year we flew into SJ on the day of the cruise. We had zero issues even with a plane change in Florida. However, going home we were delayed 10 hours. Had the delay been on the outbound flight we would have missed our cruise. On Adventure May 2017 and will be flying into SJU the day before. Too much risk. Convenient and affordable Hotel suggestions anyone?

Cheapest hotel is usually San juan airport hotel which is good on way out but wouldn't stay there on the way in, may be cheap but far from convenient Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
davekathy Posted March 27, 2016 #31 Share Posted March 27, 2016 (edited) Fly in at least the day before. Why stress with same day flights. That way if you forgot something you can always go to a store and get it. In our case we always go get our wine that day. So much nicer to wake up at the pre-cruise hotel, freshen up, enjoy a leisure breakfast, and enjoy the cab ride over to the port when you're ready to go. Enjoy your Cruise aboard the Adventure. We've stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Miramar our last two trips. It's a nice hotel and within walking distance to several restaurants. It's a 15 minute ride from the airport and 5 or 10 to the pier.

cjmx Posted March 27, 2016 #34 Share Posted March 27, 2016 First time cruisers, go early , enjoy San Juan! We have done it arrived early, same day, stayed a week later. Love Puerto Rico! Make your life easy for yourself until you have become more experienced- don't take chances, unless it is insured by choice air. Being your first cruise, I'd think you would want to make it as easy as possible. We always stay at the Hilton properties in the Condada area! Awesome. Clarea Posted March 27, 2016 #36 Share Posted March 27, 2016 ... Convenient and affordable Hotel suggestions anyone? We've stayed at the Courtyard Miramar several times because we can get it free with Marriott points. This is not a beachfront hotel, but a nice clean property with on site restaurant. Only a few minutes from the cruise terminal, and a block from the bus stop that takes you to Old San Juan.
Cigar King Posted March 27, 2016 #37 Share Posted March 27, 2016 We stayed at the Sheraton in Old San Juan last time. They upgraded our room to the Governors Suite. That was a surprise and a great way to start a vacation. Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk

LaShelle2 Posted March 28, 2016 #40 Share Posted March 28, 2016 Where are you flying from? What time is your flight? Is it a direct flight? What time of year are you cruising? It is very likely that you can fly in the same day for your cruise, since the ship leaves so late. Flights for me are only a couple of hours from Atlanta, but personally, I enjoy San Juan, and wouldn't miss a chance to explore the city. It's like getting 2 extra days of vacation. We book an early flight to get to SJU, explore the first day, and board the ship the last possible minute the next day, taking maximum advantage of our time in the city. If budget is a concern, look for affordable lodging options on AirbnbDotCom. I was able to find an entire 2 bedroom apartment for less than $70 for my upcoming trip. A rental car was only $21 through Costco. Check out the San Juan forum for ideas of things to do while you are there.
Hoopster95 Posted March 28, 2016 #41 Share Posted March 28, 2016 Convenient and affordable Hotel suggestions anyone? Hotel Plaza Del Armas.. a totally no frills hotel but super convenient and in-expensive. (google map it) Convenient - $25 taxi from Airport into the heart of Old San Juan. 5 block walk to El Morro, 3 block walk down to the Old San Juan pier area. Old Town Trolley stops right in front. Well known Barrachina Restaurant 1 block around the corner, and various stores/restaurants/etc all around you within 1 block walk including Walgreens. Absolutely perfect for full day site seeing on embarkation and go to the ship later in the afternoon. Affordable - $15 taxi to the ship. I've booked solo there twice now for less than $80. I've seen double occupancy there lower than $125 often. They held my luggage for the afternoon once for site seeing, or if your early enough their check-out is 12pm so you can site see for only a few hours and then come get your luggage and check out just before noon to go to ship for lunch. Keep in mind that this is an old historic building in Old Town, old floors, old walls, super teenie tiny elevator, etc. DO NOT expect the Sheraton or Marriott! Hoopster95 Posted March 28, 2016 #42 Share Posted March 28, 2016 (edited) We've stayed at the Condado Plaza Hilton the night before our cruise out of San Juan. Beautiful hotel, and you can see the ships in port from it. Stayed here post cruise for one night just this past December... for the right price this place is a steal. I've seen some real expensive prices and some super low, you have to be lucky I guess. Great grounds, great pool, nice hotel all around... rooms and feel are very Miami Vice'ish 80's feeling so a little dated. If you're fit only a 1/2 hr walk to Old San Juan. Right on the tip of Condado so beaches/great walking/restaurants all around you too. I would stay here again in a heartbeat for convenience. I believe I gave the taxi driver $15 (incl about $3 tip) from the ship so it's less than 10min for the pier. A connected 24hours Denny's and street level Starbucks, libe of taxi's waiting at all times. Their second building connected by elevated breezeway, they have rooms facing the lagoon which are really nice views.
