Rare manders175 Posted April 12, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2016 We are contemplating doing Brimstone Fortress when we are in St. Kitts in September. Is it doable to go to the fortress on our own and then go over to one of the beaches? Not sure about taxi costs. Or would it be easier to go on an actual "tour" that goes to the fortress and will drop us off at the beach? Thanks!!
paul58 Posted April 12, 2016 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2016 I would do a "tour" that includes the fort. If you went on your own, you would have to have your driver wait for you at the fort as there will not be taxis waiting for a fare. There is an entrance fee of $10 US to the fort. pghsteelerfan Posted April 12, 2016 #3 Share Posted April 12, 2016 (edited) We are contemplating doing Brimstone Fortress when we are in St. Kitts in September. Is it doable to go to the fortress on our own and then go over to one of the beaches? Not sure about taxi costs. Or would it be easier to go on an actual "tour" that goes to the fortress and will drop us off at the beach? Thanks!! To answer the first part of your question, yes, it's definitely doable. We did that on our most recent cruise in September 2015. We were in port from 8-5PM, got off the ship with no set plans at 8:45. At the end of the pier, just before heading inside to the cruise center will be a representative for taxis or tours. We spoke with him about getting a cab to Brimestone Fortress and then to a beach. They were able to arrange that for us and that also included a prearranged pickup time at the beach. The cost to do that for the two of us (both adults) was $28.00 USD for a taxi, each way, to Brimestone Fortress ($56.00 round trip). The entrance fee to the fort was $10.00 per person (x 2 = $20.00). We were debating on Cockleshell Beach and the Shipwreck Beach Bar/Grill in South Friar's Bay. It would have been another $28.00, each way ($56.00) to Cockleshell. It was much cheaper to go to Shipwreck. My memory is escaping me here, but I think that trip was $4.00 per person, each way, so $8.00 ($16.00 total) for 2 of us, round trip. We didn't have to pay our driver until the end of the day, when he took us back to the cruise center. Our total was $92.00 for the day, for the two of us or $46.00 per person. We also gave our driver a tip since he was great. Nice air conditioned van too. If you're interested in a tour, the island tours usually stop at Brimestone Fortress, in addition to other island hi-lights, then end up at a beach for an hour or so. But if you're really just interested in Brimestone and a beach, it is possible. The total cost would depend on which beach you were going to or how many you have in your group. If we had four people, I'm pretty sure those $28.00 cab fares would be divided four ways as it's the cost per cab to destinations. When we did this, it was just around 9AM, so our driver took as on a "detour" and showed us some hi-lights around Basseterre, St. Kitts. The reason for that is because Brimestone Fortress doesn't open until 9:30AM. We arrived just as they were opening and were the first ones there. Spent an hour and our driver waited for us (great views). From there we went to the beach, but we did ask him to stop at Timothy Hill (overlook that overlooks the narrowest part of St. Kitts where you can see both the Atlantic and the Caribbean). We were at the beach at 11AM and our driver was there for us at our 2:30PM pick up time and were were back at the cruise center 20 minutes later. We could have spent more time at the beach if we wanted. Edited April 12, 2016 by pghsteelerfan

I would think it would be easier to go on an actual tour, but it just depends on what you want to do. Our tour with Thenford Grey did not include much time at the beach, only about 1.5 hours, so it was okay (we went to Shipwreck as well) but not a long time. We also went to Romney Manor, which has a botanical garden and some history about the island and that was enjoyable. But again, it just depends on what you're interested in doing. Rare manders175 Posted April 17, 2016 Author #6 Share Posted April 17, 2016 Thank you everyone for your responses. We went ahead and booked with Thenford Grey tours so we could see a few sights and enjoy some beach time. Includes Brimstone Fortress and Timothy Hill.
