Why are not more travelers signing up for TSA-Pre-Check?

No, I understand your perspective perfectly. You're focused on the negative occurrence that happens very infrequently, rather than the positive, receiving pre check clearance, that will happen 99.99% of the time.

You need to look at the glass being 99.99% full rather than 0.01% empty. The empty glass scenario will be the likely result of your not applying for Pre Check as TSA continues to reduce granting precheck based solely on frequent flyer membership.

My mention of spending $15 more to get Global Entry rather than just Pre Check was just an additional recommendation, not the main focus of my comment about your perspective.

I am neither a glass half full, nor a glass half empty person. It's merely a glass with water in it ( or a glass with more room for wine ;)) You're not understanding my perspective at all and I don't know how you can ASSume that from a few sentences in a post. You don't know me at all - and quite frankly your "superior" attitude - since you are not providing any concrete information - is rather annoying.

I'm merely gathering information as I do with any decision I make. I prefer to look at the WHOLE picture - negative and positive alike. And I'm done arguing with you.

If anyone can give me more information (as some have done) without casting aspersions on my reasoning ability, I'd appreciate it.

I have had PreCheck and then Global Entry for five years and have never not gotten PreCheck except at Terminal 5 at LAX where no one gets it. I have gone through security over 100 times in that time span. I hope that helps.

Casting aspersions? ASSUming?

Allow me to quote you. It's straight negativity directly from your keyboard:

"I would hate to pay for it, then be one of the ones who didn't get the pre-check. My luck tends to run that way. I don't win the lottery - but I'd be one of the few who didn't get it - even with the Global entry."

There's another thread on this board, right below this one in which several people have recounted their experience with receiving pre check or not. One person says they've taken a couple of hundred flights and always gotten it. Another says they haven't gotten it only two or three times in about the same number of flights. Another says they didn't get it only once. I've not gotten it only once. My sister told me she was only denied precheck once.

As the OP, may I interrupt some of the back and forth that is going on? And, which I did not intend to have happen.

I have learned that TSA sometimes has granted pre-check for those fliers who are part of a Frequent Flyer Program, but that is now being done less often. I am a Delta Skymiles member and when I have flown First Class, I unexpectedly was given Pre-Check. First time, I got it, I did not know what it was and tried to enter the "regular" line, but the considerate TSA Agent directed me to the proper line. I assumed I was granted this perk because I was a First Class passenger. Not so?

Interesting account, it certainly contributes to the problem.

Also, why would a family of several members want to spend the money and submit to the screening interview for an occasional trip on an airplane. Especially when they are used to a modest but not untenable delay in airport security.

There is no doubt the TSA bears significant blame for totally misreading how the US public views the Pre check program.

I have a TWIC card which allows me access to work, unescorted, at marine facilities across the US. You would think that it would allow me some type of 'pre check' access at an airport, but no....more $$$ are necessary for the PreCheck program that likely has a lower level of security than my TWIC card.

I have Global Entry, TWIC and hazmat on my CDL license and NONE of the agencys will take the others background checks. The good part is I can pretty much go anywhere these days...ports, airports and haul nasty chemicals to each of them.

I have no idea, but from a selfish perspective I guess it works for me better. However, I always tell everyone that a Global Entry card is the best investment in travel someone living or visiting the US can make.

Applied for Global Entry in January and approved in about 1 month. Our interview is scheduled for July (yes, 6 months from application). Just checked both Boston (Logan) and Providence (Warwick TF Green) and for Boston the earliest appointment is January 2017 and for TF Green December 2016. I hear other airports have shorter wait times. We can drive to both of these and I keep checking to see if another (earlier) time slot opens.

Just remember even with TSA-Pre or any program that has you registered as a Known Traveler, you can be randomly selected for full screening.

Also due to the crowding TSA-Pre lines have been closed, closed early too for reassignment of personnel to handle crowds.

If Pre is closed most of the time you can leave your shoes on YMMV.

I have just filled out a GOES application and nowhere do I see any info about how far out they are scheduling interviews for the airports. We are looking at Phoenix Sky Harbor. We have not been approved yet, but would like to know how far out they are scheduling their interviews.

Can someone point me to the correct area on their website to check this out?

Thank you for any help.

If the company known as "Identigo" is involved with GOES as it is with TSA-Pre-Check, I would suggest that you contact your Congressman's office for help. My Congressman's office was able to assist me when the company's web site was not providing the information I needed.

Oh, this doesn't make me happy! :(

I applied for Global Entry earlier this month, but need it by early February. I have to interview at ATL Hartsfield-Jackson International. Geez, I hope I can get it done in time!

I've had TSA Pre-check for over 2 years and the only time it wasn't granted was (as DuckLite stated in an earlier post) when I flew from LAX. I was on American Airlines and they told me it was TSA's issue -- not true!

It's not outsourced the way Pre Check is. The interviews are conducted by DHS employees. I don't believe it's possible to determine how long the wait is at any particular location until you've received preliminary approval of your application. That's when you'll be able to access the part of the computer system used for scheduling appointments.

Not all locations have the long wait times some have reported. Just because it takes up to 6 months to get an interview in the Boston area doesn't mean it will be nearly as long in Atlanta.

In my case it was an Air France flight from TBIT. It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) that PreCheck simply isn't offered at TBIT due to all flights being international. I used it earlier this month in whatever terminal WN flies from at LAX with no problem.

TBIT trick for Pre-Check. Although there is no Pre-Check line at TBIT, there is one for T4. There's an airside corridor between T4 and TBIT.

Now originating at LAX will have you doing check-in at TBIT, so you have to judge if it's worth hiking over to T4. If connecting at LAX with no bags to check, you're in luck if using T4 through T8. All have airside connections through the tunnel and corridor. If coming in at T1-T3, you can go to T4 and enter through that Pre-Check checkpoint.

True! I guess I'm jumping the gun anyway! I have to be approved first! :D

Vicki'smom, I'm not sure where you're located, but I was able to get an appointment in Charlotte, NC in about 2 weeks a couple of months ago.

Thanks for that great information! I live in metro Atlanta, but my daughter and son-in-law live in Charlotte so I do get up that way as often as possible! If ATL has long waits, I will definitely check into booking a Charlotte appointment! ;)

You do not have to schedule your interview at the location nearest you. When you get your approval and are told to schedule, look at all the locations within what you consider a comfortable distance. Schedule whatever is fastest/easiest.

Great tip! I have only flown out of TBIT once, never connected at LAX. Even the one flight through TBIT wasn't connecting as I had spent a few days in LA before I flew to Tahiti.

In retrospect, though, I'm sorry we didn't spend the $15 extra and get the Global Entry also.

Same here. I have the pre-check and wish I'd gotten global entry for $15 extra. But it was a four-hour roundtrip drive to the closest office for the global entry interview. The other office, for regular pre-check, was nearby.
