We are going on the Gem to Canada /New England and have OBC and figured we would use it to get some lobster in the MDR where the soups, sides, and all extras won't be charged for, only charge for the lobster + 18%. We will be having 3 specialty restaurant dinners for other meals. We do miss the days of first night free lobster dinners in the MDR, but it is what it is, and accept the changes we all face in life. People had posted previously that we should get the fresh caught lobster at the ports of call as opposed to the frozen variety on the ship. A lobster roll in every port was a good piece of advice.... Even lobster rolls, many places don't include the claw or knuckle meat, which is the best by far. I would recommend a sit down lunch with a boiled lobster to see what really good lobster tastes like. 98% of the time, frozen lobster tails lose their flavor and texture. I am just of the Gem on the Canada/NE itinerary. I had the lobster in the MDR the last night of the cruise. Price was good at $30 (including gratuity) but you will do a lot better in a port's restaurant. Lobster was pretty tough. I would spend the extra dollars and really enjoy it in a restaurant. Had OBC so figured we try the lobster in the MDR. No whole lobster, just tails (I prefer whole ) but we ordered the tail, which came out broiled (not steamed as on menu - but thought it was my error - till I saw on another night when looking at menu). Anyway tails were overcooked, burnt on top, tough and definitely not worth the price-$24.99. + 18%. We weren't going to send back tails (as again I thought I didn't check the menu thoroughly -not checking if steamed or broiled ) UBP confusion!! Speaking to Frank (F&B manager ) fell in deaf ears. Wasnt looking for anything -it was free OBC from NCL, so cost us nothing, we did eat some of it, but just wondering why served dish wasn't same as description? Simple question.... Cagney's... Main dining room... LrgPizza got it right - it's the exact same plating, and the sides in the MDR are options that you'd have in Cagney's as well... The tail portion is rather small, and if you're any kind of respectable eater, I'd suggest the surf/turf combo... You'll get your taste of butter-soaked tail, and the filet will tie you over until you hit the buffet an hour later. So long as you're 10 miles offshore, it's perfectly acceptable to dunk your filet in butter as well. Maritime law is the best. In August purchase a 3 meal Specialty dinner plan. Then you can have lobster in Cagneys and/or Le Bistro. That is what we did in addition to our Platinum perk dinners. I was on the Breakaway last Nov and at Cagney's with a specialty dinning package I ordered a Porterhouse steak and got a lobster tail as well and the extra entree was charged $10, but the way it was billed I never got charged the extra.
