Rare Honolulu Blue Posted June 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted June 18, 2016 My reply to another question inspired me. Casino policies on land are all over the map on allowing their employees to gamble. Some allow them to gamble in a different area (e.g., poker dealers can't play poker, but can play the slots), some prohibit them from gambling in the same casino, and I've heard of one chain that prohibits them from gambling in any of their casinos. I was wondering how strict our cruise companies are about allowing their casino crew to gamble. Can they gamble at the same game they work at in their casino? Can they gamble in their casino at all? Can they gamble on a different ship in their fleet that they're not working on? Are the prohibited from gambling on all ships in their brand name (e.g. Costa)? Are they prohibited from gambling on any ship owned by the same corporation (e.g. Carnival Corp.)? And somewhat on the same topic, are non-casino crew allowed to gamble? I appreciate your intelligent responses.
CalLuvsCrusingToo Posted June 19, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 19, 2016 Interesting question...... must admit I don't think I've ever seen any cruise personnel playing in a ships casino. My guess would be No. But that's my guess. They would need to play with a card? Or maybe Not use one? Which is Wrong in my book, you Must Always play with a card.:p Plus some ships, you need a card in order to cashout.... Maybe someone else knows for sure.
Rare deefer Posted June 21, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 21, 2016 We were chatting with some crew members on an a shore excursion once and this topic came up. No staff are allowed to play in the casino, but if an officer has a spouse on board with them who is not an employee of the cruise line, they can play. This was discussion was with NCL staff, don't know about other cruise lines.

Mike_DeA Posted July 7, 2016 #5 Share Posted July 7, 2016 Crew is not permitted to gamble in the casino. If they are a vacationing as a guest on a ship, they can do as they please since they would be in between contracts, and not be an active employee of the cruise line at that time. I've spoken to casino staff who race to the nearest local casino when in port. I've also heard of them gambling with other crew when off duty, mostly card games such as poker. TrishRip Posted July 14, 2016 #7 Share Posted July 14, 2016 (edited) I can think of very few, if any land-based casinos that allow their employees to work in the same casino that they are employed at. As a former land-based casino employee, I can tell you that all gambling casinos on land are under control of the Gaming Commission. Most American based casinos follow the same rules to some extent, even the cruise ships. Some states are more strict than others, not allowing casino employees to gamble in the same state, but most limit it to the property they work at. For instance, Ceasar's Entertainment owns multiple casinos in Las Vegas. Employees are only banned from the one they work at.... say you work at Ceasar's Palace, you could not gamble there, but could at any other Ceasar's property... such as Harrah's Casino. That is property specific.. not just the casino. If they work in the hotel or one of the restaurants, they could not gamble in the casino attached, but could go to one of the other properties. But, any of their family members could gamble there so long as they are of legal age and not employed by that property. The same would hold true for cruise ships. The ship itself is the "property", so as long as they have a contract with that ship (property) they could not gamble in the casino, but any family members cruising could certainly play in the casino. Private poker games in the crew quarters are completely different. Of course, any cruise ship employee can gamble in any port casino, as it is not their ship! Hope that helps explain it a little better. =) Edited July 14, 2016 by TrishRip
