gagirl789 Posted October 25, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 25, 2005 Has anyone had any experience in not paying a full single supplement? I remember hearing that some lines at some times do waive this. I think it is HAL but I just wanted to see. We have a Sr. MIL that is going on a cruise with us. We are trying to see what the alternatives are, suites, or two rooms. Thanks for any advice.
superjerryw Posted October 25, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 25, 2005 I'm pretty sure that we got a reduced single supplement for the MIL on a Carnival cruise once and perhaps on Costa as well. A lot of Carnival ships still have some cabins that have bunk beds instead of two lower beds. I believe they usually give these cabins to singles. chessbriar Posted October 25, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 25, 2005 CArnival, Princess and HAL offer a limited number of single supplements. If you can grab one do it. Otherwise you are looking at full far.
jaw62901 Posted October 25, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 25, 2005 I just booked a cruise on Celebrity for Feb and had to pay the single supplement.
DEL67 Posted October 25, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 25, 2005 My sister got reduced single supplements on HAL last spring and has one for our RCCL transatlantic next month. Both were between 130% and 150%which is not too bad considering.
ahoymatey3 Posted October 25, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 25, 2005 If you email me, shwoodaas at netzero dot com, I'll forward you with a link that has specials on single supplements. We are not allowed to post such things here. I've gotten low-to-no supp on carnival and HAL. Celebrity zinged me to the tune of about 90% for my upcoming transatlantic. Hello double entrees . I booked early so I still got a good rate.
Rare geoherb Posted October 25, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 25, 2005 I am signed up to receive lots of email specials from cruise lines and Internet agencies. One just had a special of cruises with reduced single supplements.
kitty9 Posted October 25, 2005 #8 Share Posted October 25, 2005 I have three upcoming Celebrity cruises and paid the full 200% fare. The luxury lines like Seabourn and Crystal have the best single supplements, going anywhere from 110% to 135%. For some reason, Celebrity refuses to see that a huge new customer base is the single traveler. It would benefit them to no end to serve the single cruiser like Crystal does, but they just haven't been able to wake up and realize that single cruisers, especially senior cruisers with big disposible incomes, would be a great group to cater to. HAL has SOME reduced rates, but even then, it's usually in the 175% range. Forget Carnival and RCCI---they give absolutely nothing to singles. Xoe Posted October 25, 2005 #9 Share Posted October 25, 2005 Sometimes there is a reduced single supplement for less desirable staterooms (e.g., bunk beds, insides that sell last), and in a few cases there are (gasp) staterooms DESIGNED for a single traveler! There is one such on American West Steamboat Co.'s Empress of the North -- a small room with one bed -- and I've been told some Carnival ships have a few of these also. In September 2003 I enjoyed a HAL Mediterranean cruise for a hugely reduced fare (72% off brochure rate), an inside with a single supplement of 25%, much better than the usual. It was a great itinerary, a great trip. The lines make so much of their money by what passengers spend in addition to their actual booking cost (for excursions, casino, drinks, shops, etc.) that they aren't eager to have only one in a stateroom designed for two. It's hard on singles though -- it makes a cruise a much more expensive type vacation if traveling alone. (My husband hates to fly, so our shared cruises are by definition those near home; other itineraries, I go alone.)
Rare Lois R Posted October 26, 2005 #10 Share Posted October 26, 2005 Hi,:) another suggestion (if you can cruise last minute) are the HAPPY HOUR deals. There are good deals to be found with them but you have to be able to go at those specific times and on those itineraries offered. They usually have cruises offered between 4-8 weeks out. I have done 2 cruises off Happy Hours and the prices were excellent. But like the other folks, it is usally 200% on my other X cruises.
