Jillybean_513 Posted August 5, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 5, 2016 (edited) Because I don't usually have pockets, and don't give the slightest care what anything thinks, I intend to wear my sigh & sail card on a lanyard while on the ship. Can anyone tell me if the hole puncher used on ship is a regular round hole, or a slotted one that is usually punched in ID cards for lanyards? I'll be on the Carnival Dream next if that helps. Thanks and Happy Cruising. From pretty much a newbie and don't really care, Jill Edited August 5, 2016 by Jillybean_513
GUT2407 Posted August 5, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 5, 2016 Most ships will punch it for you, some lines cards can't be punched at all (or so they say) due to the electronic chip. Mrs Gut takes one with a sleeve on the end, a bit like a bank passbook holder, and puts her card, her coffee card and her daily newsletter all in it. Rare fabnfortysomething Posted August 5, 2016 #6 Share Posted August 5, 2016 I always wear a lanyard and the ships gift shop will probably have a selection.I have a plain cotton one for daytime and a glittery one for night Makes it so much easier than carrying a bag or fishing around in pockets [if you even have any] Guest services desk will punch the hole for you so they don't hit the wrong place! it's a regular punch with round hole
Rare Essiesmom Posted August 5, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 5, 2016 If Guest Services don't have a hole punch, the casino usually will. EM
maldenmusic Posted August 5, 2016 #8 Share Posted August 5, 2016 Last 4 or 5 cruises for me the S&S cards have come with a small round hole already punched. I always bring my free casino lanyard from previous cruises so I'm good to go ASAP. I would definitely lose my card if it wasn't around my neck. Rare Scrapnana Posted August 6, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 6, 2016 Many people wear lanyards with their keycard on it - people won't look at you strangely.
Lulubelle45 Posted August 6, 2016 #10 Share Posted August 6, 2016 Word of advice...the gift shop has some with a plastic card holder you slip the card into. Try and avoid these and just have the card punched. After a few days that plastic can break as one passenger found out the hard way when she lost hers in port. Pulled out lanyard with nothing there. Momnicmic Posted August 12, 2016 #13 Share Posted August 12, 2016 I decided for my 30th Anniversary my husband and I would try a cruise. Found this forum and I was wondering about this lanyard thing. How do you carry your cards and stuff to the pool, beach, around the ship? I heard the lanyard is not "cool"?
alfaeric Posted August 12, 2016 #14 Share Posted August 12, 2016 We do the lanyard thing, and on RCI, you do see both the slot and the round hole punched. But it's about 8:1 round vs. slot. So I'd suggest a lanyard that works with a round hole (since they also go into the slot.
alfaeric Posted August 12, 2016 #15 Share Posted August 12, 2016 (edited) I decided for my 30th Anniversary my husband and I would try a cruise. Found this forum and I was wondering about this lanyard thing. How do you carry your cards and stuff to the pool, beach, around the ship? I heard the lanyard is not "cool"? Do you really care what people who you don't know, or have no ties to think of you? I don't. Besides, of the sum of my parts that could be considered not normal, a lanyard is not the leading "not cool" item, as I interpret culture. For sure, someone will post "it will show the locals you are a tourist", as if just being you isn't enough to tell- clothing, skin tone, etc. We stand out like a sore thumb regardless of a lanyard. How do you carry your cards and stuff to the pool, beach, around the ship? I heard the lanyard is not "cool"? define 'cool' they are convenient for many people especially those who tend to wear outfits that do not have pockets. I normally do not like them because I think they chafe around my neck plus I have issues getting any card in and out of the sleeve as they tend to be quite rigid. that being said, Mr Spook's new job has a version for sale that I really like. it sort of looks like a waterproof iPhone cover, only much smaller, just being enough for the ID badge. but it is thicker so more than one card can go in at once without being too tight, it has a flip top so no need to punch holes. so I had him get me one for the next cruise. Momnicmic Posted August 12, 2016 #17 Share Posted August 12, 2016 Thanks everyone. Like I said, never been on a cruise and have a million questions. For instance, using the same previous question. When off the ship in Bermuda, is it safe to leave your belongings on a chair on the beach while in the water? How much is the shuttle to the beaches? (sept 25-Oct 2) cruise. I have a lot of research to do. LOL

ray98 Posted August 12, 2016 #19 Share Posted August 12, 2016 There will be people with lanyards everywhere...you won't stand out the slightest. I have one that has a plastic holder on the end that you slip the card into and sometimes I will just get it punched in the casino. Both work fine. Organized Chaos Posted August 12, 2016 #20 Share Posted August 12, 2016 We bought waterproof cases/lanyards with the intention of putting things in them on beach days (S&S cards, maybe a cellphone, cash). The ones we bought turned out to be a little bigger & more cumbersome than expected, so we didn't use them for their intended purpose. But we found what we thought was a much better use for them. First off, these are the ones we bought (Amazon)... We ended up taking the lanyard off of the case itself. The clip at the bottom of the neck strap is a quick-release clip. We threaded the lanyard through the hole in the S&S card (already punched when we got it, Port Everglades) and it became the perfect lanyard because with a quick and easy squeeze of the release clip, the S&S card was free to do whatever we needed to do with it. Then back on the lanyard for safe keeping. Lightweight and barely noticed it was there. You might be able to find similar lanyards without buying the entire waterproof case, but I highly recommend one with that quick-release clip.
