IRL_Joanie Posted September 13, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2016 (edited) Our prayers for the Crew Members and their families of the Harmony of the Sea. Apparently there was a malfunctioning Lifeboat that broke loose and dropped 10 meters while a Crew Life Boat drill was being conducted while docked in Marselles France today. 1 crew member killed and 4 others taken to hospital. Story here: https://www.yahoo.com/news/m/339822cf-370c-38b4-8229-55a9b195ae34/ss_crew-member-killed-in.html God Bless Joanie Edited September 13, 2016 by IRL_Joanie

Rare erewhon Posted September 14, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Such sad news, prayers for all. Thank you for the link. When we heard this news earlier this morning, we were reminded of the Volendam lifeboat accident in Lyttelton Harbour, when a crew member was killed. Rare Lady Arwen Posted September 14, 2016 #12 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Such a terrible tragedy. This also happened on NCL Breakaway this summer in Bermuda...one crew member killed when a lifeboat fell. Must be very difficult for the crew and staff of these ships when this happens. Condolences to the families of the lost crewman.
chengkp75 Posted September 14, 2016 #13 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Just a slight correction, on the NCL ship, it was the rescue boat that fell, not a lifeboat.

Rare Copper10-8 Posted September 14, 2016 #15 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Very sad! Rest in Peace! A similar accident (fall wire failure) occurred on Volendam in January 2011 in Lyttleton/Christchurch, NZ with the very unfortunate loss of life of an Indonesian crew member
IRL_Joanie Posted September 14, 2016 Author #16 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Thank you for correcting my error. My mistake also. But... in our defense, the original article did say lifeboat. No matter which it was though, it still breaks my heart that it happened. Joanie

Joanie I think the correction was in reference to the NCL tragedy. I have not seen any further reports on the Harmony of Seas tragedy. Please post any links found that give more information. Thanks to all following this. m-- Edited September 14, 2016 by RMLincoln

Please post any links found that give more information. Thanks to all following this. m-- There is a thread on the RCI forum. The ship sailed this morning for Rome, minus the one lifeboat. Not certain whether it was damaged or whether it is for forensics. Two of the crew returned to the ship, two remain in hospital. There probably won't be any further reports unless the French police find gross negligence on RCI's part (doubtful) and a news reporter gets a hold of it. It will take a while for the BMA to do its investigation, and then you have to dig for the report.
RMLincoln Posted September 14, 2016 #19 Share Posted September 14, 2016 Thanks for the update. Good to hear that 2 crew were released from the hospital and able to return to the ship. m--
