Low key birthday surprise

Decorate the cabin door where the birthday person doesn't see it until they walk out in the morning. I'm doing this next week for my SIL. It helps we're not sharing the cabin. Plus I found a cute tiara at the dollar store I'll give her if she wants to wear it. Good luck with your surprise!

Pre-coordinate with the restaurant manager. The waitstaff will all come and sing [not very well] for you. Lots of singing in the restaurants every night. Birthdays. Anniversaries.

Low cost - High Effort: We also do "surprise" decorations on every cruise (and we cruise a lot). Mostly decorations from the dollar store. We were on a fall foliage cruise from Boston to Quebec last week and the room was "magically" transformed with fall leaves and decorations.

Medium Cost - Low Effort: Highly recommended. Order a birthday package from NCL. Your room steward will come in while you are out, put up a banner and balloons. You also get a small cake from the ship (not very good, but a cake).

Happy cruising!

There is a $35 party package NCL sells in the gifts section:

Rejoice in style with garland, confetti, balloons, and a 10" party cake. Decorations set up in your stateroom on your requested date. 10" cake has "Happy Birthday" written on it. Comes with knife and plates, napkins and forks for all guests in stateroom.

I've purchased a similar thing on Disney Cruise Line (it's basically the same package) and it worked out very well.

I just ordered this for our daughter while on our up-coming cruise. I was able to put a specific date on them being set up as well.

I have done this on Carnival a couple of times and always very nice!

Any tips on a low key birthday surprise on the NCL Star ? ( dont want waiters coming out with a cake singing lol )

I did tell NCL that it was my husbands birthday and they did provide a certificate for a cake. I did reserve Le Bistro for the evening meal and requested the birthday cake be presented with NO SINGING (he would have be mortified and perhaps launch himself overboard LOL). They had no issues with the request and it did not cost any extra.

I will add my support for the $35 ship package. We boarded on my husband's birthday 2 years ago and on my birthday last year. The cabin was decorated with balloons and a Happy Birthday banner and there was a very delicious cake. We didn't do anything at the dining room because neither one of us is that outgoing, so the package was perfect!

It was my birthday on my last NCL cruise. I didn't say anything but got a cupcake and card (very formal - family name before my Christian name!) delivered to my room. We could have handed in the card to the Maitre D at a restaurant of our choice that evening and I would have been serenaded by the wait staff. DH hates that fuss and so I did not take up the offer.
