Porthole cabins?

Can anyone give me any advice about PH cabins? Specifically on the Magic. It says there is a single bed and couch. So it is good for 2 pax and they make up the couch at night? We have gone from suites/aft wraparound balconies to insides....:( economy socked it to us, but I consider myself very lucky to be able to even CONSIDER booking a cruise. Looking at booking Magic and they have PH which is as good as an OV in my book! :) Just want to be sure so I need expert advice from you all!

I can not tell you anything about Magic Porthole cabins just that our experience with porthole cabins has been pretty good! I like the natural light and we store junk in the porthole window area! I would book porthole again I'd just make sure it wasn't like the M1 on the Paradise...right next to a cleaning area...room stewards made noise there constantly...otherwise never had an issue

Porthole cabins are a great value. you get the natural light as you would in and OV, but at an interior price. Some PH cabins have a single and a sofa (which is made into a bed for the second passenger, but most are identical to OV's, with two singles that can be made into a king.

There are also 1A's with portholes. These have a twin and a sofa that can be made into a bed. The porthole cabin category has 2 twins that can be made into a king.

I have has 2220 on the Magic, a porthole,. And I have had 2217 on the Dream (sister ship, same type cabin) which is the 1A with portholes. I did this with my son and I slept on the sofa bed.

1A's are cheaper than the portholes. The portholes used to be the same price as a 4A but they have since raised the price probably due to the fact that people liked them and they sold out fast.

We LOVE porthole cabins. They have heavy metal plates that you can close and sleep and sleep and sleep. You open them and see if you are in port or it if is raining, etc. They are the size of an outside but for a bit of trimming which is more than made up for with the storage area already mentioned.

Thanks for all the expert advice! The cabin is on deck 1, right at the front of the ship! The description says single bed with couch that turns into a bed. It is DH and I and we have no problem sleeping seperate! :p Did an inside the past 2 cruises and tho we miss the balcony and OV, even a porthole would be great vs. an inside. We really like to be able to see outside when we get up in the morning! And to have SOME kind of natural light. :o

I almost always get a porthole cabin when I can. I like them a lot. But just a word of warning about the sofa for sleeping on. On my recent cruise, I found the single bed to be too soft and springy for me, so I ended up sleeping on the sofa (was already made up), and while I do prefer a firm mattress, found it to be just a bid too firm. It was ok though for the 6 nights, just not the most comfortable for me. If you or hubby are not to fussy about mattress comfort, you should be fine though. I think it is just me and my "old" bones lol.

Okay, thanks for the heads up! I can relate to the "old bones." And the old everything! Everything on us creaks or cracks or aches and hurts and we have to crank ourselves up, so no matter....I would much rather have some view to wake up to besides a wall! We usually have a "drinks on us" card from the casino by day 2 anyway, and that helps lol. ;):p

The last time we stayed in a 1A porthole room, the steward waited until we arrived so he could ask if we would rather have him make up the sofa as a bed (which remained as a bed all week) or to make up the bunk which would drop down from the ceiling. So check whether your cabin has that feature as well. We chose to use the sofa as a bed. This is not a fold-out type of sofabed. it is a twin-size mattress with chunky foam bolsters at the back to make it comfy for seating. The bolsters are taken off when you use the sofa as a bed, but the bolsters are still in the cabin if you want to use them on top of the bedding.

Thanks for that info. I would use the sofa as a bed, but ask him to put it back to a sofa during the day.

I've been in porthole rooms on the Fantasy and Elation and we love them. Those rooms had the regular twin beds that could be pushed together.

We're going to be in a PT on the Fantasy in January. I booked it specifically for the porthole. DH has never been on a cruise, but he's sails and I thought the porthole would be a nice touch.

As a solo traveller I love those 1A porthole cabins (and always say NO UPGRADE - since that would put me in an inside - no thank you!)

I find I do need some natural light and the size is just fine - in fact a bit more floor space if you don't have that 2nd bed. I do prefer deck 2 tho as I found the portholes on deck 1 a bit noisy! (if you check my Breeze review - in signature below - you will be able to see some of the cabin pics! - unfortunately the other pics don't show up in my old reviews due to 'disappearance' of the photo web hosting sites :( )
