Have any sprint customers cruised recently?

Recommended Posts

I just got off the phone with them in regards to my cruise next week. I’m just wondering if I have this straight, for one thing had trouble understanding her. She said as long as I’m at port I can text as much as I want with no-charge. ?? Not sure I can believe that. Our first stop is Keys so no problem there and the only other stop is Cozumel. She said voice calls would be .20 per minute while at port. I told her the website says 2.99 and she said that’s old, they have new service and it’s cheaper. I have a “wifi calling” setting and will buy a wifi plan on board so I’m assuming I can make and receive calls for free using that setting. She didn’t seem to know too much about that. I just don’t want to text at port and make calls using wifi calling, thinking there is no charge and then get a big bill. The last time I went on a cruise which was before wifi was available, I traveled with others who had sprint and we were all told something different, but I sure wasn’t told texting was free at port. They told me to turn off my data for the whole trip. Just wondering if anyone who cruised recently can say what they experienced. Thanks

I have Sprint and just returned from a European trip, so I can share what I learned. I didn't make any calls so only know about texts.

I got the following message aboard the ship (Princess):

On cruise ships to call US dial +1-area code-number. Calls: $2.99/min, Txt sent: $0.50 recvd: $0.15, Data: Not Available. Sprint Care +1-817-698-4199

While I was in various countries (Italy, Greece) or the ship would get close to land, I would get these messages:

SprintFreeMsg: Welcome to Sprint Open World! While in Italy texts: $0.00, calls: $0.20/minute, data: $30/GB. Sprint Support: http://www.sprint.com/swwsupport

And

To use international data, don t forget to set international data roaming to on in your phone s settings.

I got back on Sept 21st and I am still waiting on the bill. On my last trip to Canada, we had 2 phones, one had the OneWorld turned on and one didn't. We got billed for text messages so make sure that is turned on (look on website).

Not sure about the wifi enabled but image it would eat up your internet mins?

I'm on the app and can't seem to figure out how old this post is, but that info is correct. I used data and text in every port (Aruba, Bonaire, Grenada, Dominica, St Thomas, and Grand Turk) and I also called in two non-US ports. My bill was only $4 higher than at home, and that corresponded with the two calls I made. Makes Sprint so much more worth it to me!

I got the same information but did it online so I have a complete print out of the conversation. Free texting international and then a little data time. We will be using the data for mapping and bus information. We don't send out or make calls while on vacation unless it is a death in the family.

I used Sprint Global Roaming in the Baltic last April an had good coverage and no additional charges on my bill. For me it was truly free. The data was at 2G speed but it worked. I had a recent Caribbean cruise and used it there. It is slightly different there in that Sprint gives you free 3G data up to two gigs I believe. Calling is free in some ports and $.20 per minute in others. Nothing is free if you go through the ship's system. Only works in the ports. Hope this helps.

I'm cruising next week; searched Sprint's website looking for current info on Global Roaming. As I understand it, texts and data (at 2 G) in the ports is free with my current unlimited plan. Not planning on making any calls, so not concerned about that. Has any Sprint customer traveled recently, used texting and data in the ports, and truly not been charged for it?

Be sure to contact Sprint before you go to enable Global Roaming. For $25 a week you can upgrade to 4G LTE. It does work very well.

I did in November and it worked fine. I had bad reception in a couple spots but was able to access it in all 6 ports I visited. No extra charges, but make sure you go right back to airplane mode on the ship.
