DFWJean&Bill Posted November 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted November 9, 2016 We just got off the Liberty of the Seas. We have been on several cruises and were pleased that they had someone at the door of dining areas reminding EVERY person to use hand sanitizer. On the Liberty they had a 'greeter' but he/she did not mention or have sanitizer. It was available, but only about half the people even noticed or used it. This is especially worrisome on the Windjammer where every person touches the buffet utensils. I personally noticed one lady cough a raspy cough into her hand, then move to the buffet line, yuk. Is this new to all ships?

cb at sea Posted November 10, 2016 #3 Share Posted November 10, 2016 Depends on if there is any viruses aboard. If they don't have it, don't assume you're safe, however!

It was mandatory when we were on Liberty a couple of months ago, as the preceding cruise had an issue with gastrointestinal distress.
CGoguen Posted November 10, 2016 #5 Share Posted November 10, 2016 While I'm sure it is helpful, it many cases it is just an illusion. Especially at buffets, they can sanitize everyone and then once inside somebody can sneeze or cough and then touch things.
kali101102 Posted November 10, 2016 #6 Share Posted November 10, 2016 This is why we never eat at the windjammer! Some people are so nasty and do not know proper hygiene. Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app

Rare vacationlover_mn Posted November 10, 2016 #8 Share Posted November 10, 2016 In addition to using their hand sanitizer, I bring my own AND use a napkin when touching the serving utensils. I've had norovirus on a ship before, so I'm kind of paranoid! :) Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

sweetlove13 Posted November 10, 2016 #10 Share Posted November 10, 2016 Sometimes I think I should bring disposable gloves to wear while I get my food & touch the utensils then take them off & use hand sanitizer but that's probably overdoing things... Langley Cruisers Posted November 10, 2016 #11 Share Posted November 10, 2016 This is why we never eat at the windjammer! Some people are so nasty and do not know proper hygiene. Improper hygiene can happen anywhere along the way, even in the dining room and specialty restaurants. Do you know how many people have touched your cutlery before you? The glass your drink came in? What about the salt and pepper shakers? And pulling out your chair? I think if we really knew, we'd never eat outside our own kitchen again, and even then it would be speculative. . Rare John&LaLa Posted November 10, 2016 #12 Share Posted November 10, 2016 I hate it when they try and sanitize you as you board the ship. One hand has sea pass in it and the other is carrying/dragging luggage. Just not practical Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Forums mobile app

gaylemh Posted November 10, 2016 #15 Share Posted November 10, 2016 One of the things I like about Anthem. The WJ entrance is roped off and there is someone standing there directing you to wash you hands. Love the idea of having the sinks outside the WJ. Desert Cruizers Posted November 10, 2016 #16 Share Posted November 10, 2016 My SIL brought her own hand sanitizer, we used the dispenser or had our hands sprayed going into the dining room, but have wondered how good it really does.
ATG Posted November 10, 2016 #17 Share Posted November 10, 2016 Our last cruise we were chatting with a couple whose daughter was a researcher at the CDC. She had told her parents that the hand sanitizer was very ineffective. I don't know if that is true or not. I always use it and try to limit the things I touch. I haven't been ill yet, so I guess my turn is coming.
Suiteguest01 Posted November 10, 2016 #18 Share Posted November 10, 2016 When we were on the Harmony of the Seas in September, theres was basins at the entrance to the Windjammer and a greeter ensures every guest washes there hands as they enter. So how does the sanitizer help?

Sent from my iPhone using Forums I have also considered bringing disposable plastic gloves to handle the utensils in windjammer. I wish they offered them at the entrance but they cost money and I can't see them going that way. I personally have contracted the gestural intestinal bug twice. Not a fun way to spend two days of a vacation.

Havingfun2010 Posted November 10, 2016 #22 Share Posted November 10, 2016 I predict within 20 years, people will not travel, or even leave their house. They will live in a sealed environment, with cans of lysol available in every room, in case there is a break in the seal.
Desert Cruizers Posted November 10, 2016 #23 Share Posted November 10, 2016 If someone is coughing on board, then it is wide open as we all stroll through the ship. We were on one cruise and by the 2nd week there was notable wide spread coughing. Sanitizers won't work for this.

I haven't been ill yet, so I guess my turn is coming. Sanitizer kills good bacteria and isn't effective against all germs. It is overused and is not as good as washing your hands. It gives a false sense of clean. Edited November 10, 2016 by BeachChik
Carmen37 Posted November 10, 2016 #25 Share Posted November 10, 2016 I use Zylast and it is supposed to protect you against viruses including Noro for 6 hours. I haven't been sick yet but I'll keep using it as a safeguard. Sent from my SM-S975L using Forums mobile app
