put me on a ship Posted December 4, 2016 #1 Share Posted December 4, 2016 I've only done one other RCI cruise, a 4 nighter to the Bahamas, and really don't remember dress code. How strict is RCI for MDR?? We are doing an 11 night, so should have 2 formal nights, 2 smart casual nights, and 7 casual nights, according to the website. Suggested attire for smart casual (for men) is a jacket and tie...are they strict about that? My husband doesn't mind wearing a suit and tie 2 nights, but not 4! I guess if they are strict, the buffet always works! Thanks!
Mrsinsyder Posted December 4, 2016 #2 Share Posted December 4, 2016 They're not strict at all. Some people chose not to partake in wearing formal attire on our cruise and no one cared.
Ken at the beach Posted December 4, 2016 #3 Share Posted December 4, 2016 Nothing is enforced. Many will show up on formal night without a tie. Wear what you feel comfortable wearing.
reallyitsmema Posted December 4, 2016 #4 Share Posted December 4, 2016 He does not need a jacket for smart casual, if they even have smart casual on your ship. On non-formal nights, my DH usually wears khakis and a polo shirt or a casual button down shirt. Really, no different than a casual night.

I am happy to report, and John would be proud of me (I hope), I wore my suit both formal nights and never wore my shorts during evening hours into the DL or CL. I also always wore a collared shirt. (I wore shorts in AM ) Having said that, I saw shorts in all on all nights including formal nights. Wear what you feel comfortable in. There are some that may not have my opinion. Most men at our table wore at least collared shirt, or shirt/tie, or sports jacket. I was only one with a Suit on at my table both formal nights. easyboy Posted December 4, 2016 #6 Share Posted December 4, 2016 What your husband plans to bring and wear are just fine. Smart casual is enough even on formal nights. They are not strict on enforcement. Sent from my SGH-M919 using Forums mobile app

BallFour4 Posted December 4, 2016 #8 Share Posted December 4, 2016 Smart casual has been dead for a decade. Jacket for formal night, wear a tie if he wants. The rest of the nights it's pants and a polo shirt. I wear khakis or jeans; both permitted. . Sent from my iPhone using Forums
TejasPenguin Posted December 4, 2016 #9 Share Posted December 4, 2016 Each cruise we pack lighter than the previous. My husband hates ties so, no ties. He takes khakis in a couple of colors and a few collared shirts, knit and cotton. The best investment for cruising was a neutral linen sport jacket. Dresses up any outfit. I wear sundresses of various styles and lengths. Everything is comfortable. We each walk on with one suitcase. We do not, however, wear shorts or jeans in the MDR although many do. smootsdce Posted December 4, 2016 #10 Share Posted December 4, 2016 All are correct except one minor point...some RCCL MDRs do not allow shorts. It is very casual otherwise, even on formal nights. Some are in a tux, others are in jeans and a t-shirt. Be blessed, Danielle
Rare vacationlover_mn Posted December 4, 2016 #11 Share Posted December 4, 2016 My husband does khakis and a polo or nice Hawaiian shirt most nights, tie, dress shirt and dress pants on formal. On my last 2 cruises, we sat with at least one guy who wore shorts and Hawaiian shirt every night. Rare vacationlover_mn Posted December 4, 2016 #12 Share Posted December 4, 2016 Oh, and sometimes he does a jacket for formal nights, but not always... he's never felt out of place either way... Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
smootsdce Posted December 4, 2016 #13 Share Posted December 4, 2016 Vacation Lover, That is awesome you have had someone who could wear shorts! My husband got turned out of the MDR for wearing them. He had only brought one pair of jeans and a pair of slacks that he had to rotate through for all 7 nights. :( Some guys have all the luck! lol. Be blessed, Danielle
Rare vacationlover_mn Posted December 4, 2016 #14 Share Posted December 4, 2016 Interesting! Both cruises had a guy in shorts, on Independence it was a 60+ year old, on Adventure, it was a 30-something... Didn't ruin my day, and makes for a good story! shipgeeks Posted December 5, 2016 #15 Share Posted December 5, 2016 I've seen men in shorts turned away from MDR, including on casual nights. The dress code says no shorts.
troykahack Posted December 5, 2016 #16 Share Posted December 5, 2016 (edited) Smart casual has been dead for a decade. Jacket for formal night, wear a tie if he wants. The rest of the nights it's pants and a polo shirt. I wear khakis or jeans; both permitted. . Sent from my iPhone using Forums Some speciality eats and DL/CL still list Smart Casual but haven't seen this term used for MDR in a while. Remember, MDR serves a Breakfast and Lunch seating too. Shorts are the dress in these two times. I can't say I saw shorts in MDR on formal night but witnessed them on other nights. I don't wear shorts in Dinner Seating MDR. cruisegoal100 Posted December 5, 2016 #17 Share Posted December 5, 2016 We have never seen a man turned away wearing shorts in MDR on first and last nights in last year or so. Have been on 45 Royal cruises and shorts are now acceptable for men except possibly on formal nights...but it's ship dependent and shorts should not be really short! marty1950 Posted December 5, 2016 #18 Share Posted December 5, 2016 It's such a casual world today, people should be able to wear what they want as long as it is not offensive. I live in Florida and no matter what restaurant we visit there are always people in shorts, and no one seems to mind.
shirgall Posted December 5, 2016 #19 Share Posted December 5, 2016 There's been a distinct change in attire from when I first started cruising in 2003 to now. I didn't see more than a third of people on 11/27 Navigator dressing up for the formal nights in the MDR.
George C Posted December 5, 2016 #20 Share Posted December 5, 2016 I never wear suit/tux/tie other than a formal night, it is rare to see suits other than formal on all major lines.

shred5 Posted December 5, 2016 #22 Share Posted December 5, 2016 My last cruise I wore shorts every night even on formal night and no one said a word. I wore a nicer pair of shorts and a collard nice button shirt and a nice hat. Yes I took the hat off during dining.

shred5 Posted December 5, 2016 #24 Share Posted December 5, 2016 Why? I guess it is proper manners to do once dining at least in older days for men. I guess with statement hats now a days it is ok. Save

I still appreciate a man with manners - hat removed in a restaurant, standing when a woman enters the room, opening the door for someone, etc.
