Could any one tell me were the ships docks in San Diego, is there anything in walking distance to do. Is seaport village close enought to walk to. we will be on the Sapphire with small chidren.Thank you. Teresa

Seaport Village is a little less than a mile, I think. Don't know if that is doable with young kids, though. They have bicycle-cabs that you mght be able to hire to take you there.

Are you embarking out of San Diego or is this a port call? It might be fun to take the trolley (which stops within a couple blocks of the pier). The kids might like Old Town (one of the trolley stops), which s a historical area with a lot of shops, restautants, etc. If you have time, there are buses to Balboa Park that you can pick up on Broadway (2 or 3 blocks away if) that will take you to Balboa Park and the zoo.

It has been awhile since we had to entertain small kids, but unless your children are into tourist "kirsch" i.e. shopping for junk trinkets and t-shirts, Seaport Village is not worth the walk. Consider Balboa Park for the zoo and/or museums although there is no easy way to get there other than a cab. The trolley north to old town is easy from the port and it has several decent restaurants and some historical buildings. The trolley south goes to the new Petco Park and provides access to the Gaslamp District. North of the dock is the "Little Italy" area with great eating and a small Firehouse Museum. If money is no object, there is always Seaworld.

The Old Town Trolley does stop at the Zoo; it's a hop-on, hop-off tour. I agree, for families you can't beat Balboa Park.

Born and raised in San Diego and I have to agree, Balboa Park is a must do. Seaport Village isn't really what it used to be. My kids get bored when we go, we love the park, It has a great museums all over and the train and the carosal. I love Balboa Park. Have fun.

Yes, Balboa Park is great for young children. Next to the Zoo is a train ride on a minature train and the merry-go-round. A must for small tikes. We are now on the 4th generation San Diegian to enjoy the Zoo, the train ride and the merry-go -round. There is also the Pepper Grove Park in Balboa Park that has picnic tables and play equipment for young children.

I agree with the earlier posters; Sea Port Village is great for adults, but not for children.

I think a point of exclamation is necessary. The trolley that I was referring to is a light rail system and does not go to the park. I forgot about the Old Town Trolley which is a tourist bus tour of the city. Here is just one webpage that features the tour.
