Question about the CHEERS! Program

How thorough are the workers on the ship of actually scanning your cheers card? I noticed on my first cruise 2 years ago that people would just "show" their card to the bartender, and the bartender would get them their desired drink. It would never get scanned. (Thus, essentially allowing you to get more drinks)

But we had some friends who just got back a couple of weeks ago, and they said their cards were scanned every single time and it was very strict.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

They don't have to scan your S&S card with the Cheers sticker on it, they can just type in your folio number, but they are not suppose to.

Either way you will be "charged" for the drink and it will count against your 15 limit.

They don't ever serve a alcohol beverage without printing a receipt. Now, even the Drinks on Us card you get in the casino are counted against your 15 limit, so not really free.

To be quite honest, my main concern was if one of the people traveling with us in a different stateroom wanted to get a drink for themselves (they may drink 1 a day, if that) would they be able to take my card and order a drink? Or would I need to be the one to go order it and just give it to my friend?

They would not be able to get a drink with your card. When they scan your card your picture shows up so they know it's not you. If it's one drink a day, have them buy it. I'm sure a few bucks will not break their bank.

That is true about only needing the folio number. It will still show up in the computer and count against your limit. They do it all the time in the dining room and there's nothing wrong with that. They write it down on the first night and then can ring up your drinks from that without needing your card. You still sign for your drink. It all comes out the same on the receipt.

You can't share the package with friends. There is a photo attached to your card. It comes up any time they scan or type in your folio number

Or, save the $10 a day and I can go get it for them :) if it doesn't break their bank then it surely wont break Carnival's

Is there a time limit between drink orders? I know that Carnival lists a time limit between orders on their site, but do the bartenders follow that strictly?

It's 5 min and yes they have to follow it. The computer locks them out of your folio and doesn't allow them to ring up another drink.

Surely we arent the only people to ever conjure up the idea of "splitting" the pass among more individuals than the people in your stateroom...lol

No you're not. But be careful. That is a pretty hot topic on here. Just don't get busted on the ship. They can revoke your Cheers and not issue a refund. Not saying they actually will, just that legally they can.

Just got off the Breeze and had cheers. Our folio number was entered into the machine, picture pops up, signed a receipt each time. I also heard a bartender tell someone they were up to 10 drinks that day, they were not happy about that said no way. She entered it again and said yes, 10.

My wife and I have purchased cheers a few times. A couple of times they have told her how many drinks she has had left and we said we did not have that many. They went thru their computer and figured out we did not have that many drinks. They updated the total drinks and all was good.

Well, now I guess I am trying to determine which will be the overall better option for me...to get the pass and just split the cost with other travelers and order their drinks for them, OR just bring my own "drink" in a mouthwash bottle or something? Yes, I know I'm being cheap :)

Maybe in my second life when I can afford to drink as much as my body wants to drink! Until then, that won't be an option

But you can only get 15 alcoholic drinks per 24 hour period from 6AM to 6AM with Cheers. So if you share with your friend, your personal allotment will be less. I say if you don't think you would get your money's worth or don't want to be restricted to 15, then just pay as you go and have your buddy get their own.

Most likely whoever you saw just showing the bartender their card was a "regular" at that bar and the bartender was able to memorize they're 4 digit folio number and just entered it manually to ring up the drink. Trust me they were paying for it or having it count against their 15, it isn't like a bar on land where the bartenders can give a round on them to their regulars.

Another option... if you are a wine drinker, you can bring a bottle of wine for each adult. Also, if you go online to the fun shops, you can purchase a bottle, in advance, for your room. Some of the packages include mixers. Just another option. I'm not the booze police - but sneaking booze in my luggage doesn't really fit in with my idea of a relaxing, treat myself vacation. I'd be too worried that it would be confiscated and destroyed. On a previous cruise, my brother ordered a drink for us on his program and gave it to us during a show. We didn't enjoy the drink... we kept waiting for someone to come and tell my brother he was loosing his Cheers program. We didn't ask him to get us a drink and we told him not to do it again. If you don't drink enough to buy Cheers... your bar bill really won't be that expensive.

  • 11 months later...
I don't plan to drink more than 15 alcoholic drinks in a 24 hour period but if I did, can I buy a drink off the card? ok am I cut off? just curious

Buy before you hit 15 because once you hit that magic number you will be cut off.
