If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

Do you think it would be a fair compromise to have NO smoking indoors, but unlimited smoking outdoors?

If I can avoid smoke - I do. Smoking outdoors makes it easy to avoid it - it doesn't linger. I've been fine on ships that had no smoking indoors, but had areas on the deck where smoking was allowed. That is a perfect solution. Unfortunately, Norwegian is one of the few lines that has the casino in a completely open area, so there are large indoor areas that are impacted by the smoke. If they could prevent the smoke from leaving that area, I'd be fine with it. Unfortunately, they have no plans to do so, so the mega ships that appeal to my kids, and the Caribbean routes that my husband prefers are also the ones where there will be large areas of the ship that have smoke permeating.

The most common and dangerous thing on a cruise ship is falling. Would you book a cruise that guarantees no movement? Maybe doesn't even leave port! Would you pay more for it? There seems to be a lot of hyper focussed venom regarding the issue of smoking on a cruise. It really should be much lower on people's list of concerns.

Yes I totally agree with you falling is definitely a danger on a ship and is right up there as a concern as smoking is

When a pax falls on the stairs they will tumble and cause a domino effect that perhaps allow another 2 or 3 pax to tumble as well

Just like when the smoking in the casino floats over to the non smoking side and then up to deck 8 and down to deck 6 and toward le bistro it can hurt pax as well ...perhaps every single other pax on the cruise

The good thing about the smoke is that it is constant whereas unfortunately a tumbling incident is not

You found the perfect comparison ....smoking dangers versus tumbling dangers

No red herring intended. I'm using analogies that are equally ridiculous to the overblown reaction against smoking on a cruise.

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Actually you aren't. Falling, for example, affects one person (unless by some miracle, they fall on other passengers), while smoking affects those around the smoker or those that pass by. As far as using too many dishes, cleaning their sheets, using plastic on the ship, eliminating laundry, etc. you have no idea what people are doing or campaigning for to protect our environment, so to assume they are not doing anything about the things you mentioned is pretty disingenuous and compairing them to smoking is way beyond belief. In life there are some things we can control and some we can not. One thing that we can control, is being around second hand smoke and that is all that people who don't want to be around it are trying to do.

That doesn't fit their agenda hence they ignore that fact. Ironically enough most of the falls involve alcohol but they ignore that also because they like to drink.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

Haha... this is the easiest fishing I've ever done. I Know that people are concerned about the environment... just not willing to make personal sacrifices. Don't see anyone willing to give up all the things I mentioned. The fall analogy was just a ridiculous comparison. It got you fired up though. I doubt anyone has TRUE concerns for their health from second hand smoke on a ship... otherwise they wouldn't go on one! People just like to complain about others. Again... hate fueled

There's lots of things that smell bad really! I won't go into detail, but should we ban them? Or people responsible for them?

Sent from my iPhone using Forums

If you feel we should ban them, then start a thread asking for them to be banned. I personally think all cruise lines should put a blurb in the newsletters about applying too much perfume and have mentioned it on my surveys. BTW, no one is saying to ban people who smoke.

Didn't get me fired up don't concern yourself because I'm more upset about it being 22 degrees this morning and can't really justify going out to watch the st pats parade here today. Just toooo cold. Oh well none of the kids are marching today anyway. They grew up so fast and the 2 youngest need to get to their part time jobs and the other one bless her heart is still sleeping. I've got stuff to do around the house anyway but perhaps we can grab a lunch with the girls later

Btw

I enjoy following your posts...all of them...keeps me on my toes

Then there's all the people who don't wash their hands after using the bathroom, or don't sanitize before going to eat. Where's the policing, fines, kicking off ship related to that! Ladies... if only you knew how many of your husbands don't wash their hands in the bathroom, you'd be mortified! Those are the people causing imminent danger. Not the smokers!!

It's not hate fueled against the people, but the cigarette smoke. Hate the sin, love the sinner. It is a desire to get away from the smoke itself. Again - this is about having some opportunities for the people who don't want to breathe smoke an option that doesn't exist on the Getaway, Breakaway or Escape. What would be the harm for smokers if there were a handful of non-smoking cruises?

As long as I wash my hands frequently - I can be safe! :) My assumption is that people aren't washing their hands, so I always wash thoroughly before eating. Having 3 kids means that we always live in a germ fest - it's part of life that you take precautions to avoid getting sick, which most medical folks will tell you is to keep your own hands clean!

And these my friends are reasons why someone loses in a debate....off topic and not relatable to the discussion at hand.

I suppose it would be okay as a "themed" cruise. Just like a gay cruise, new kids on the block cruise, psychic cruise etc. There's all kinds of odd little niches out there. I suppose a militant non smoking cruise would be appropriate [emoji3]

That's all the thread was asking about from the beginning - would there be interest in a smoke-free cruise. It seems that the majority answer was a YES, with very few people saying no.

See you are actually wrong here

I cruise anyway but I know how to avoid the casino on the mega ships because I'm not a big drinker and really? Gambling? Um no

I prefer the sun deck and can easily get to it because I know how to get there to avoid the smoking areas

So my point is basically to let ncl know that they have incompetent ship designers for their mega ships because not only are the casinos a disaster with smoke....a number of other venues are too....venues I'd spend money in

Now on the jewel class ships the casino and its smoke are so easily avoidable that it's comical

I'm not too concerned about smokers though because I know the day is nearing when all indoor areas on ships will be smokefree

The smokers will eventually die off and the younger demographic....you know those that are easily offended ...will demand...and get ...smokefree ships...along with their hot cocoa stations...

Smokefree ships are a collateral benefit

Wow! The question itself sure opened the floodgates. I read it as if NCL might designate a particular cruise or cruises as totally non-smoking and yes I would on both counts. I do not like cigarette smoke, or cigar smoke, or pipe smoke. I have never smoked.

That being said, there are people in this earth who smoke and I immediately think of my SIL who I adore. As long as smokers follow the rules I accept that is their perogative. I just got off the Epic last week and yeah, the casino was smoky. So, I just played BJ in the morning or non-smoking slots when I had some spare time. Yeah, I might have preferred the machines in the smoking section... I just "did something else" like extra spa treatments.

I know I could go on X, but I choose NCL where I love the suite perks and my platinum perks.

I heard on the new ship build there will be 2 casinos. One for smoking. One non-smoking. That's long overdue.

The Escape was supposed to have it, and the CEO stated that they were going to have a separate, enclosed smoking area. I e-mailed NCL and asked if that work was complete yet, and if not, would it be done before our upcoming cruise. I received the following response :

Good Afternoon,

I have been advised by the ship there are no plans in place to wall off the Casino. Please let us know if there is anything else that we can assist you with.

Kind Regards,

I posted this thread the day I received that e-mail.

I'd booked the Escape thinking it would be the perfect option, and I was incredibly disappointed that they are not fixing the problems with the casino and smoke it generates permeating into the Atrium. Honestly, I have been monitoring reviews of the Escape to gauge how bad the issue is, with possibly canceling that cruise and going on another line. We are booked in the Haven during peak summer season - so it is a pretty big cost for us, and I'm not sure I want to spend that money if we are going to be bothered by indoor smoking on that cruise. I'm hoping that the summer cruises are more families with children, and there are typically fewer smokers in that crowd.

NCL could learn a lesson from its smaller (though wiser) newer "family" member, Oceania. Only one indoor smoking area in a glassed in room. Even outdoors there's only one small corner niche on the pool deck.

But at the same time, the post is asking a rhetorical question. OF COURSE non smokers would book an all non smoking cruise! Certainly you didn't believe the question would be free of debate! And my analogies are good ones. People have their own perspectives and those who are dissatisfied will likely always be dissatisfied with something. Most people on this board have been cruising for years. None of those years have been smoke free cruises. Why change what everyone loves? [emoji3]

Sounds like you would be dissatisfied with a non smoking cruise! And you appear to be very angry that anyone might consider offering one to those who would enjoy it.

Why change what everyone loves? Sounds like lots of people don't love it, do you not want their viewpoint to be heard?
