eyelovcrusin Posted March 14, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 14, 2017 We are booked on a 14 day cruise leaving Sunday. Due to a medical emergency, we may miss Sunday's embarkation. It is possible we maybe able to catch up with the ship towards the end of next week in Curacao or Aruba. Anyone have experience with this and how it would work? Besides our airfare costs, any other associated costs? When would we need to notify Celebrity? Thanks for any helpful information during this difficult time. I would be calling Celebrity like right now to find out my options instead of waiting for random people on a message board who might know the answers to the questions you have, or give you misinformation. If you booked through a TA, call them, they would need to handle it for you. Hope it all works out!
jb008 Posted March 14, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 14, 2017 Also if you have travel insurance you should be discussing options with them as well.
eyelovcrusin Posted March 14, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted March 14, 2017 No,we didn't purchase insurance. I don't want this thread to turn into a pros and cons/ debate about travel insurance. I plan to call Celebrity, but awaiting some crucial info (tests) that might give us a better idea on whether we can travel and possibly when. I merely am reaching out to those who have had experience with catching up with the ship at a port that is not the embarkation port. If anyone has done this I would be interested in hearing about what to expect. Thanks
dkjretired Posted March 14, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 14, 2017 You need to call Celebrity, there may be fines involved due to the PSVA.
Banjo Posted March 14, 2017 #6 Share Posted March 14, 2017 Can you get to the next port? I was on a 7 day E. Caribbean Reflection cruise. Met a couple at one those end of cruise brunches they used to have. They said they missed the cruise departing from Miami but caught in San Juan. Thanks for any helpful information during this difficult time. 1) Contact T/A(I hope you used one!) 2) Contact insurance company that you used for the trip. God help you if you did not buy insurance!!!! 3) If you did NOT do or have any of the above, you then have to figure out how to get to the first port the ship(Eclipse, I believe) goes to. Where it says "We may miss...") Hopefully you "might" still be able to make embarkation (your doctor is the one to determine that) You of course can contact Celebrity, but they are unfortunately under NO obligation to help. NUMBER 2 is your best option.

It can be the factor whether you get reimbursed or have a total loss. Sorry, but it's a fact of life. I hope the tests come back that you can go. I agree with those who say to contact Celebrity immediately and find out the current procedure to obtain permission for the downline embarkation. In some circumstances it is permitted, and in others it is not. So it is much better to get approval in advance rather than just flying down there and risk being turned away. A few years ago, we were told to contact the emergency travel team emergencyteam@celebritycruises.com and send them the details: Downline Embarkation Request Reservation ID: XXXXXXX Ship: Celebrity XXXXX Sailing Date: XX-XX-XXXX Stateroom XXXX Downline Embarkation Port: XXXXXXXXX Embarkation Date: XX-XX-XXXX But the procedure may have changed since then. As you are so short on time, I would suggest starting by immediately calling the Redeployment Desk at 888-281-9343 and they should be able to direct you from there if there has been any change in procedure. Hope everything works out well for you. Good luck! Edited March 14, 2017 by varoo
Nora23 Posted March 14, 2017 #10 Share Posted March 14, 2017 You may want to check with your credit card company. For several years we were buying trip insurance. We have Chase preferred Sapphire. I was reading through the different benefits we have and found out we have trip interruption. You may want to give a call. You may be like us and not realize you have it. Good luck to you [emoji256] Sent from my iPhone using Forums
cb at sea Posted March 14, 2017 #11 Share Posted March 14, 2017 If you have to incur the expense of flying to Aruba to sail back to the US...not sure that's a financially sound move.....
DrivesLikeMario Posted March 15, 2017 #12 Share Posted March 15, 2017 Before you contact Celebrity (assuming you have no TA and have read you have no insurance) - check out the prices of flying to Aruba or Curacao. If it's too high, it might make sense not to go through with the cruise. If it's not too bad, one may be much cheaper/easier to get to than the other and that may have a bearing on where you join the ship (if you're allowed to do that). Good luck. Please let us know how it all works out.
NCHPcruiser Posted March 15, 2017 #13 Share Posted March 15, 2017 I hope you receive good news concerning the medical test and are able to travel. Also hope that it won't be complicated to meet the ship as soon as possible. Good luck and prayers!

My Chase Freedom card provides trip insurance that covers expenses if you have a medical problem or DIF (death in family) before your trip departs, although not if these happen during a covered trip (one that you paid for with the card). Since you are dealing with a medical issue before your departure, you may be covered. Wish you the best.

justcrusn Posted March 15, 2017 #16 Share Posted March 15, 2017 Please remember to check with choiceair for your flights, if needed, the savings might be worth it. Good luck and hope you have a stress and worry free cruise.
sanger727 Posted March 15, 2017 #17 Share Posted March 15, 2017 Yes, as long as you board in a non-US port it should be feasible since there won't be any PVSA violations... lately though on a round trip cruise, they have been less willing to accept people starting late or leaving early since it changes how they prepare the paperwork for border control. So, theoretically possible but celebrity has to tell you whether or not they will allow it. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
RickT Posted March 15, 2017 #18 Share Posted March 15, 2017 Sorry to hear of the situation you are in. And sorry to see that many people have turned this into an Insurance discussion. 1) Good luck with your tests 2) Figure out your possible options of catching up with the ship (Port/Cost of Airfare/Travel/etc) and once you have a few ideas call X to see if any of them work (ensuring there are no restrictions on boarding the ship/etc) and are allowed. You don't need to commit to anything today... but knowing what your options are will help determine your course of action later including when you need to notify Celebrity of your decision to join the ship at a later date. Good luck. Please let us know what you find out...

eyelovcrusin Posted March 15, 2017 Author #20 Share Posted March 15, 2017 We are still in limbo, so to speak. The illness is with my wife's daughter. She has seen numerous doctor's and specialists and none have figured out what's wrong. Although they all agree there is something organic ie. not in her head, wrong. She is in severe pain and don't feel comfortable leaving her in someone else's care. I have contacted our TA and really not much she can do for us. Supposedly, we can change one name on the reservation, so my wife was wanting me to go with a guy friend/relative. Not sure about it at this time. Still hoping for a miracle. Step-daughter has another doctor appt. tomorrow and scheduled for seeing top surgeon at Lurie's Children's Hospital but not for almost 2 weeks. Thanks for all your well wishes and information. Happy Cruising!!!
Suzanne123 Posted March 15, 2017 #21 Share Posted March 15, 2017 Due to a last minute work problem, DH had to join our 10 day HAL cruise in Curacao. We just notified HAL, and they arranged transportation ( we paid ) from the airport to the ship. He wasn't able to just walk through security on his own. The captain later sent a nice note and a bottle of champagne.

journeymore Posted March 16, 2017 #23 Share Posted March 16, 2017 I'm sorry about your dilemma. In October 2016, I was scheduled for a B2B with the 2nd half being a transatlantic. Unfortunately I had to attend a funeral and missed 2 ports. 1st I called Celebrity, 2nd insurance, 3rd choice air. It was relatively simple. Celebrity contacted the ship with my arrival in Athens. Choice air rearranged my airfare from LAX instead of IAH. There was a fee of about $500 if I remember correctly charged by Choice air.
