Islasbubbe Posted March 29, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 29, 2017  Can anyone give info regarding getting around Great Stirrup Key in a motorized, collapsible wheelchair (Air Hawk). My hubby is ambulatory, but due to heart issues cannot walk distances, so we have the Air Hawk. Are there paved pathways at GSK? Are the beach and beach chairs accessible? Not sure we want to navigate sand. I'm not concerned about the tender since hubby can walk on, the w/c collapses like a stroller, and weighs only 41 pounds. Thanks for any input. cb at sea Posted March 29, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 29, 2017 There are some paved areas...and if you want to go onto the beach, they will have "beach chairs" with big, soft wheels and someone to assist you....you can't keep the chair, but they will help you to your "spot", if needed. newmexicoNita Posted March 29, 2017 #3 Share Posted March 29, 2017 though there are paved areas they quickly become sandy and we all know sand is hard to walk on for a person with no disabilities. Our last time at GSC daughter was on crutches: she had a hard time getting around. We, as seniors had trouble to a degree. MY advice, don't try it. It is doable but might not be much fun for anyone. BabysBday Posted March 29, 2017 #4 Share Posted March 29, 2017 If you do go to GSC, the best beach area for mobility-impaired people would be the nearest beach to the tender dock, by the Patron Bar and behind the vendors. It's near the paved areas, they have clamshells available, and the taco bar isn't too far off, either. There are also patches of shade due to palm trees between that beach and the excursions hut and the restrooms where some people who didn't feel like being on the beach hung out. There are a few picnic tables and some people dragged beach recliner there or just laid down towels.
