Carnival has made it abundantly clear that the Carnival arm of their corporation is all about families and family activities....and that children are welcomed and embraced. All of the latest ships (this decade) are about kids with the slides, rope course, camp Carnival, more "fast food" dining options.

 

 

 

Patrons who choose Carnival are well aware of this business scenario. Subsequently the elimination of adult pools seems to be the logical step in their progression. Also, pricing on Carnival (the lowest of all their lines) is attractive to families and presents them with a great opportunity for a family vacation.

 

 

 

People tend to forget that Carnival isn't a single line cruise choose. Holland America, Princess, Seabourn all offer more adult oriented cruises (Holland America is notable for catering to the over 50 sailor).

 

 

 

I think the grief of this for many is that the "cheap" or "affordable" cruise is no longer the "adult" experience it was in the past. Since there are other offerings that cater to "adult" within the scope of Carnival Corporation I think people are beating a dead horse on this one. It is up to the consumer to choose between lines, to choose what best reflects their life styles.

On the cruise I just took, "Serenity" was 21 and over. No one under 18 was permitted in the casino.

The more I think about it, the more I think they are going towards Havana areas due to it's popularity and money making ability. They are taking away the adults only pools where they can (the ones that aren't in Serenity) thereby creating a higher demand for an exclusive area in which people are willing to pay a premium. The only thing is, why do they have to do it long before the ships are scheduled to go into dry dock? Glory just came out so it will be what, another 5 years or so? Meanwhile adults will continue to get more frustrated. Why couldn't they leave it as is and then add Havana and then make the changes? I'm guessing because by that time the adults will be chomping at the bit to pay to get away from the rugrats. They are simply going to make Conquest Class ships Mini Vistas. It's starting to make sense.

I voted to keep the pools adults only (except inclement weather situations).

 

I'm taking my dad on one of the ships and paid for an extended aft balcony one deck under the aft pool for numerous reasons. His first cruise 30+ years ago was Carnival but along the way he outgrew the brand and demographic. He now does 2+ week cruises on more diverse itineraries and was weary of going for four days on CCL, but I chose a room that should give some privacy and it is adjacent to the adult pool and some quick service food, to avoid the madhouse of lido and buffet. Serenity area is a toss up bc no shade.

 

Now I am the one that is weary of going, worrying I've paid a lot of money for something he won't enjoy.

Carnival recently announced that the aft pool areas are now family friendly and are no longer designated for adults only. What is your opinion?

 

 

So does this mean that there are no adult only outside areas by the pool for adults. I have two kids that are now 18 and 23 and even when they were younger I would still prefer an adult only area.

The only area that is still kid free is Serenity. The areas outside the aft pools were always open to everyone because the Pizza Pirate and other food venue is there. But rarely would you see any kids there unless they were eating. The pools were only open to adults. Now they're open to everyone.

It feels like we're in the midst of another baby boom (goodbye planet), and I really believe the mass market cruise lines are trying to snap up the dollars of families who can't afford Disney (or even could in the past, but can't afford the year-after-year price hikes that way outpace inflation).

 

...but I definitely don't think getting rid of quiet/adult areas is the way to do it. By this poll, I'm surprised at how many agree with me. I know there are lots and lots of family cruisers on these boards, and on Disney it's not unusual to see people writing reviews complaining about the fact that the few adults-only areas even exist. (Yes, I mean people literally type "it's Disney, there shouldn't be any places where kids aren't allowed!")

 

It must be kind of hard for the nickle and dime lines--they know they want those family dollars, but they also know that 18+ activities are huge profit centers. NCL has multiple upcharge areas on some ships that allow adults to get away from kids (Vibe, thermal suite). But there's only so much space on a ship and they can only do so much "unbundling", especially when they're simultaneously trying to provide a "suite" experience on some other part of the ship.

 

I think they should let Disney be Disney.

This is huge for us. My wife and I spend our sea days camped out in the adult only pool area relaxing, swimming, spending money at the bar...( see that Carnival). The yelling and splashing that is done by kids just being kids will make it very difficult for us to enjoy this area any more. " Big mistake, big.... huge " Carnival

Absolutely want adult only areas. I also don't like the American table, feels like going to Denny's. If you want casual go to the buffet. I want tablecloths back. Some of us want the finer things in life.

I've only been on one cruise and it was with all 3 of my kids, but I am totally all for adults having their own pool to relax and not have to deal with kids around.

Lol! I hope carnival sees this (I also hope it gets many more votes so that it holds more weight). I am speaking as a parent of an 8 & 9 yr old. If I want family swim time, I go to the family pool. If I want a quiet dip without having to constantly be on the alert for my children, or endure splashes, cannonballs, and shrieks of fun, then I would love an adults only pool. If a ship already has them, leave them as is. I love family time, I really do, but I'm more than a mom. I'm an adult. Mommy needs a vacation too, so when my kids are occupied in the kids club or on the slides with my husband, I would love an adults only dip. This is our first cruise with the kids, but on land resorts we do the same. They'll do their thing and mommy will be around the adult only areas doing her thing. We make time for family fun, but not 24/7. I can only imagine what its like for non-parent cruisers (including empty nesters and grands, they are parents, but they paid their dues.). Carnival will be making a mistake if they convert adults only pools to family friendly ones.

See, the flaw in this is that not all parents want everything available to the children. As a mom, I want an adults only break too. My children are very well behaved, but I want to lay on a lounger and actually veg out, get hot, take a dip, have a drink etc. My "lounging" time in the pool is a lot different with kids (pretty much equates to me monitoring them in the pool, or on the edge of the pool- completely alert, no reading etc.)

 

Disney is the most kid friendly place in earth, but they understand that adults only pools are important and have them on their ships. I wouldn't even have one of those $10+ fruity drinks with my kids in water. Plus, lets face it, some kids don't have pool etiquette (splashing, canonballs etc.)

We just returned from the Valor. Main pool and aft pool were taken over by kids. Kids didn't seem interested in the pool by the water slide. The Serenity deck had no pool, but did have 2 hot tubs. Unfortunately, if the wind is high they close that area. Aft hot tubs became overrun by small children. There were several children in one aft hot tub, so we got in the other with 6 other adults. When a small child started to get in with us, I told him to go to the one with the kids (politely). The parents weren't around. This was our 1st Carnival cruise (thoroughly enjoyed it), but would appreciate an adult pool.
