Doesn't seem fair

Out of interest, is this move over deal thing, only applied, to cabins booked with "let them pick your cabin" or does it apply to any booking, such you have book a particular cabin.

as I was just curious ?

And if somebody gets a good idea, or an upgrade, good on them,

The one thing is you look at what is cost and then if you happy with the cost, then it is a good deal for you.

Cheers Don

I've gotten a move over with a cabin I got where I chose the cabin.

I would ask your TA to check your reservation to see if it is marked for no changes. I pick the cabin I want. To me, it's all about location. So, no, I don't want to find myself automatically 'upgraded' to a suite under the lido deck where I'll hear the chairs being moved around at 5 in the morning.

This also means I won't be offered a move over offer. I understand that and accept that.

As for booking 6 mos out, that may seem a long time out but it is not. Our next cruise was booked almost a year out. The one after, for 2018, was booked as soon as bookings were available. Now, the next cruise is way more expensive and the category I wanted for 2018 is sold out. So 6 mos isn't really that long a time in the cruise industry.

The reason it is usually offered is because they need your particular cabin type and location.

I'll bet the OP would be more appalled than they are now if they were to have been active on CC over the last couple of years and read some of the move over and move down threads. Lots of interesting offers. We always hope, but, not a problem if someone gets one and we don't. Luck of the draw and not why we book the cruise anyway.

I do think some folks are being a bit snarky in response. OP is stung by the unfairness. Princess is in business to make money and isn't really interested in fairness/justice etc unless it impacts their bottom line. One angry passenger cancelling two cruises doesn't have an impact.. It's the same reason that they are famously inconsistent in enforcing their rules on all sorts of things like dress codes, etc. They don't care about fairness to an individual passenger. They are willing to anger one passenger if it means several more will be happy and spending money onboard. They care about overall passenger satisfaction, which includes selling the maximum number of cabins..

It's tacky for folks on the roll call to brag about a move over offer. I've been on 14 Princess cruises and got a move over offer for the first time on our last one. We couldn't take it because we were not flexible on timing. So we ignored it and didn't think more about it

I never thought of people 'bragging' about their good fortune, but celebrating it. And yes, expecting that others would celebrate it as well.

We went on one of our cruises because we won it in a Sweepstakes. Should we have felt ashamed to share that information at our dinner table? What happened to being happy for other people? I am always as happy for other people as I am for myself.

It's all about perspective - some people would think saying "I have been on XXX number of cruises is bragging and tacky, but on this board we do it all the time.

If I win a vacation I'm going to celebrate it and I'm not going to feel like I have to hide it. If you win a vacation call me and we'll celebrate it together.

People who can't celebrate other people's happiness? That's their problem. I'm not making it mine.

I was one of the people who were lucky enough to get a Move Over offer. We live on the West Coast of Canada and our cruise was out of Southampton. We had two balcony cabins on Caribe. We rebooked for next year. I look at is as winning the lottery. Will I tell anyone on my rebooked cruise, NO! I will keep it to myself and count my blessings. Princess is a corporation and they need to make sure their ships sail at 100%. People cancel last minute and that's what they count on. Obviously they needed our two cabins and I was elated to get the offer. I'm Elite on Princess so I've paid full price a long time.

To the OP.

So you're upset with Princess? Or is it that someone else got what maybe you wanted? Do you also get upset when someone posts that the upgrade fairy struck? So every time someone gets an upgrade, it's not fair to others that had to pay that "upgrade" cabin fair.

Be happy for the enjoyment that others are getting.... who knows, it may come your way next time.

Airlines do the same thing with offers at the gate, but in that situation every one has an opportunity to take the offer.

There is a big difference.

If the airline does not get enough "volunteers" (who usually just get a voucher good for travel within a year on that airline and usually with restrictions on how/when it can be used), the persons with confirmed tickets but with no room on the flight for them will not be able to get on the flight. (And the mandatory compensation in this case is higher than what they give volunteers.)

However the cruise passenger with a GTY will be able to get on the cruise as the cruise company will raise the "bribe" offered to move over until someone takes it.

You can still get a move-over offer.

Marking your reservation as will not accept an upgrade means they will not switch cabins on you without asking you first. If they really need your cabin, they will still make you an offer. You just do not have to accept it.

To say get over it is to me bad. I've booked over 6 months in advance paid top money as we are from the uk and I find out this sort of stuff happens. Yes I understand cruises like airlines overbook but to just choose a few to get what I can only call an outstanding offer an bear in mind they still get their cruise is what I find wrong. If this is what needs to be done to move cabins around then an email should surely be sent to everyone and whoever comes back to them first gets the offers not just a selected few

You have received exactly what you bought and paid for! What anyone else does has no bearing on your transaction.

You'll also need to add those that gamble to your list. Some get free drinks on board and some are offered free cruises for their play in the casino. So some actually get a free vacation and make money on top of it.

I guess my question to the OP is what would make it fair? They need the room and the only way to get someone to cancel their ENTIRE vacation is to offer them a free trip. It's not like the airlines that can send you to your destination in a few hours. So what would you recommend? They send notifications to everyone in the same category instead of a select group of people? It's still going to be a race to respond and they are only going to take a handful depending on their needs. So it's still a crap shoot on who is going to get this deal so why does it matter if they contact everyone or only a few, your chances at getting the offer are statistically the exact same in either case.

It's the same way at the airports, first to the counter gets the deal.

Every cruise line does this, it's not just Princess so I guess you will just have to skip cruising altogether if it's that bothersome to you.

And I bet those who live in the Eastern Caribbean whose homes and Islands were just wiped out by Irma don't think it is fair that you get to cruise the Western Caribbean while they are trying to put their lives back together.

Perspective.

Amen.

Happy early birthday! And I for one don't feel your post was too snarky. Stay safe!

I agree that it wasn't snarky & that your feelings were something probably many of us including those not in harms way were thinking.

You think every one who books the same category will pay the same price? When we decide on a cruise I start following the price in the category I want. Just me, just curious. If you book 6 months ahead you may pay, as an example, $5,700 per pax. You book about 75 days out and that same cabin will be perhaps $4,400. The cruise lines have mathematicians (acturies) who plan pricing for maximum profit. Airlines do same.

What somewhat amazes me is that a cabin in category (say) BE is $4,000. While the cabin next door is category B2 at $4,600. Whether you pay $600 more, or less, depends on which side of the wall you are on!

Exactly. Which is why it pays to book early and be able to get the cabin on the cheaper side of the wall.

We book early to get the cabin we want; then hopefully add S&S to it later. Yes, I pay more for that, and if a move over comes along, yippee, and I may or may not take it, but I will be happy for those who get it, not resent them. I know that I am in the exact cabin that I picked and paid for. On the offset scale, I DO get my military benefit, shareholder benefit, and a nice OBC from our Big Box T/A at about 10% of cruise fare. That puts a nice sweet feeling in there too
