It'sRC4ME Posted September 9, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 9, 2017 From Cruise Industry News: Royal Caribbean International announced on Saturday afternoon that it was sending ships to St. Thomas and St. Maarten in a bid to not only provide supplies, but transport evacuees following Hurricane Irma. The Adventure of the Seas will make a humanitarian stop in St. Maarten on Sunday and Majesty of the Seas will make humanitarian calls in St. Thomas and St. Maarten to provide supplies and also assist in transporting evacuees in St. Maarten to safety, the company said. The September 15 cruise aboard the Majesty of the Seas has been cancelled and the ship will be utilized for rescue efforts in the Caribbean. The Empress of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas are also ready to assist Key West and Tampa once the impact of the storm is known, Royal Caribbean added. https://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/17732-royal-caribbean-to-deploy-two-ships-for-humanitarian-efforts.html

Rare mandyleighflies Posted September 9, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 9, 2017 Yup! We were on the 9/15 sailing and while we are disappointed, we totally understand and respect RCCL's decision. Already looking at our rebook cruise with our 25% off.
deliver42 Posted September 9, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 9, 2017 It looks like RCCL and NCL are doing the right thing bringing humanitarium aide. Carnival, as usual, sits on the sidelines.
caribill Posted September 10, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 10, 2017 Yes, it is a very good thing that Royal is doing. But it is not entirely altruistic. (a) The ships could not have their scheduled cruises with paying passengers (b) The ships cannot stay in their home ports but must be out at sea anyway with the entire crew So doing the humanitarian runs both does good and makes the expenses that would have been incurred anyway a tax writeoff. In the case of the Majesty it was the regularly scheduled cruise departing on the 15th which absolutely could have sailed that was cancelled. soloadventurer Posted September 10, 2017 #10 Share Posted September 10, 2017 i wonder will RCCL send aid to other island / Turks / British Virgin / Cuba / Barbuda ? Great work - i remember Haiti many years ago and cruisers taking extra clothes with them at labadee
kawagama Posted September 10, 2017 #11 Share Posted September 10, 2017 I'm really glad to hear this. I can't even imagine how the ships could possibly stop in St. Maarten with a boatload of tourists while the island tries to recover from the damage caused by Irma. Great work - i remember Haiti many years ago and cruisers taking extra clothes with them at labadee For the big ships, Barbuda would have to go through it's fellow island, Antigua. Having been to Cuba and now having friends- that's the one we worry about the most- Irma was on the coast for SO long, and we've been seeing reports that some of the resorts on cays were wiped out. And it will be a while until we hear anything, as Cuba shut off the power and internet yesterday.
Getting out there Posted September 10, 2017 #13 Share Posted September 10, 2017 Someone on Adventure right now reported they're stopping by St. Maartin to drop off supplies and pick up 300 stranded people. No one is allowed off the boat. It'll be interesting where the people stay and where they're going to be dropped off. Next day is a sea day, then Carcao

Next day is a sea day, then Carcao Makes sense that they would drop them off in Carcao as it is also a Dutch Island, my daughter is a student at AUC on St Maarten and the US military has been evacuating US citizens to Puerto Rico, other countries are also flying their citizens out to their respective countries, with the exception of Canada, there are still 300 Canadian students and faculty stranded on the island

Sky616 Posted September 11, 2017 #18 Share Posted September 11, 2017 Thanks Royal and NCL for helping these poor folks any way you can. They need a lot of help as do others in other islands. What a path of destruction this storm has left.

mooseman52b Posted September 11, 2017 #22 Share Posted September 11, 2017 I thought I read that NCL had a ship providing aid too. Several reports show NCL Sky going to ST. Thomas for relief and one report mentioned that Carnival would be dropping off supplies on their regularly scheduled stops.

Retired LEO Posted September 11, 2017 #24 Share Posted September 11, 2017 RCI and NCL jumped immediately to provide aid and supplies to those islands in need. Carnival announced late yesterday that they will drop off supplies. It seems Carnival was shamed into doing something.
sjmbruce Posted September 11, 2017 #25 Share Posted September 11, 2017 This is so awesome! It was disheartening reading about the food and water shortages and it brought tears to my eyes to read that Royal & NCL are helping out. My husband and I will hopefully be going on our first Royal cruise next year and after reading about their generosity I can foresee many more cruises with them in the future.
