KazLoudspeaker Posted October 10, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 10, 2017 Hi Wanting to hear from expereinced cruisers - which side do people think would be best to the book for the Athens to Dubai cruise? We have a balcony and want to maximise the view. Thanks to all When you get to the Gulf of Aden you will be on 'Pirate Watch' so you will not be using your balcony and the banks are more distant here. This is only for about 6 days or so. During the transit of the Suez it is fairly boring, lots of sand either side, dotted by camps, guard towers & heavily armed protection forces, so side does not really matter. It also depends on the time you do the transit & your position in the convoy. When we did it we had to be at a mustering point off Port Said by 7pm. Our transit started about 10.30pm. We arrived at the Great Bitter Lake early morning, so wasn't much to see in the dark. We started the 2nd leg at about 1pm and we were at the beginning of the convoy, although again not a huge lot to look at. About 30 minutes of watching the banks saw me done. Depends if it particularly interests you. The initial passage may be more interesting if you do this during day light hours. Others may have more info. Hope this helps. Rare uktog Posted October 10, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 10, 2017 I would not worry at all about which side. During the Suez convoy best viewing is outside up on Deck 11 Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Tom47 Posted October 10, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 10, 2017 People traveling r/t UK to India 100 years ago would ask for POSH(Port outbound,Starboard home) cabins.
coldweathergirl Posted October 10, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 10, 2017 When we sailed this route last year on the Celebrity Constellation, I researched and found the staboard side to be recommended as you can see small towns in Egypt while transiting the Suez Canal whereas the port side had sand dunes and not much else to look at. BillC Posted October 10, 2017 #6 Share Posted October 10, 2017 As Ann mentioned the best place in the front of deck 11. If it's too hot for you the Living Room is a good substitute. I've found that trying to optimize which side to book does not really work since you'll be away from land for most of the trip and the captains seem to randomly choose which side of the ship to dock . Additionally the blackout period is only at night, and on our last crossing was only for 4 days. It is very interesting to watch the " specialists " get on and off the ship in international waters and the large amount of " equipment " that is in the boxes they bring. florisdekort Posted October 10, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 10, 2017 For Suez, it doesn’t matter - the view is equally good on both sides. For everywhere else, the ship goes out 12 miles to sea (so it can discharge), so it doesn’t matter either. ChucktownSteve Posted October 11, 2017 #9 Share Posted October 11, 2017 Have you considered a VX aft view? We've had a couple of aft views on other ships and it's now our preferred "side."
