Borobodur-Excursion

Recommended Posts

We will be on the Asia cruise from SIN to SYD next month. There is one full day excursion to Borobodur temple. Has someone experiences with this excursion from previous cruises?

I have done this. The site is truly extraordinary. But it's a long day -- getting from the port to the site. And it's mighty hot and humid. I am pleased I did it 15-20 years ago. Age is taking its toll, and I am not certain I would want to do it now. But the memory is vivid, and I am pleased that I did it when I did.

I have been to Borobodur 3x. One time we had an overnight in a fabulous hotel/Resort in Yogakarta. If that is a possibility, take it! But if it’s limited to a full day excursion, take it! Yes, it can be hot, and it’s a very long day, but Borobodur is at the very top of my travel experiences...beautiful, spiritual, unforgettable.

I was pleased I didn't do the long day trip. Passengers were coming back exhausted plus the heat and humidity affected several passengers.

Thank you so much for your feed back. We will book it for the experience of Borobodor, where it is hard to get otherwise. The excursion decription says that the bus will have a police escort. Has anyone made this excursion from a Silversea ship in recent years?

I have not made this trip recently. However, I have had police escorts on several excursions with Silversea in sub-Sahara African ports. The police escort in those cases was more to expedite the bus's progress through horrendous traffic than for security.

Borobudur is not at its best when the day-trippers arrive. The light isn't great, either. But if it's a case of seeing it or not seeing it then I guess you have to go. Personally, I think the best way to see the temple is at dawn and sunset and combine it with a stay at one of the world's greatest hotels - Amanjiwo.

I did a Jogjakarta/Borobudur/central Java trip a few years ago and spent a night at Borobudur. Dawn and sunset are definitely the best times to visit the temple. However, DO NOT stay at the government-run hotel on the temple grounds. While it's super convenient and the grounds are beautiful (you are literally 'on site' next to the temple), the rooms are: old, grotty, worn and none too clean. The staff are lackadaisical and just don't care about anything.

If you can afford it, do your self a favour and stay at Amanjiwo... or, one of the better, more reasonably priced hotels in the area... just not at the hotel 'on the grounds'.

We did the day trip to Borobodur the first time we sailed SIN-SYD and we're booked to do it when we sail in a few weeks. It's a long trip; traffic in Indonesia is terrible. And, as others have noted, it's very humid. But in our view, it's well worth the journey.
