cruisesusie Posted October 27, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 27, 2017 We will be spending a few days in Rome pre-cruise next fall and would like to take an excursion to an area outside of Rome since we have visited Rome a few times & have covered all the must-see sights. Can anyone recommend a guide/driver to offer suggestions of places to see for a day tour outside of Rome. Thanks in advance for your help. travelqueen555 Posted October 28, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 28, 2017 Contact Fabrizio at All Around Italy. http://www.allarounditaly.net He is wonderful. We have used him several times. He lives in Rome but does tours in many Italian cities. We used him for Rome, Florence, and Naples - he has a great personality. If he is not personally available he has other drivers that are great also.
bennybear Posted October 28, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 28, 2017 I believe Rome Cabs does as well. Might be worth your while to visit Orvieto only about an hour by train away.
wieslaw Posted October 28, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 28, 2017 ....... Can anyone recommend a guide/driver to offer suggestions of places to see for a day tour outside of Rome. Thanks in advance for your help. Susan The company that we used for our airport - port - airport transfer also offers Day Tours. During our ride to the Civitavecchia I talked with the driver ( owner's son) and I inquired about tours. He told me that they have some drivers that also have guide license and they offer their services for different tours. Tours can/ may be modified depending what one wants to see.. We were very happy with their service. Perhaps you might want to see what others wrote about them on Tripadvisor. Write to them and ask if they can provide what you want . capriccio Posted November 14, 2017 #8 Share Posted November 14, 2017 Last month we used Rome Illuminated (http://www.romeilluminated.com/personalized-tours/) for two tours in Rome: the Vatican and Underground Rome and were very impressed with our guides and the company's correspondence with us. A friend, who recommended the company, used them last year for an all day trip to Tivoli that he still talks about. They also offer a tour to Ostia Antica (the port of ancient Rome). euro cruiser Posted November 14, 2017 #9 Share Posted November 14, 2017 Italy's system is a little different than other countries where I have hired drivers and guides. In Italy these are two different licenses and although one person can hold both licenses, they cannot employ them simultaneously. In other words, your driver cannot also be your guide in the sense that they cannot leave the vehicle and escort you around any site. That doesn't mean that they can't impart all kinds of wisdom, information and entertainment while driving you, however. If you stop at site and want a guide you'll need to hire that service separately.
Rare fabnfortysomething Posted November 14, 2017 #10 Share Posted November 14, 2017 basically most of the well reviewed Rome tour guides named on here over the years will also do alternative tours outside of Rome companies we have used and can recommend are Rome-car-tours and ItalyTours.eu

Susan We used Papillon Service Italy Tours in both Livorno and Civitavecchia. As we had been to Rome previously, we also wanted to head "the opposite direction" away from Rome. Look at the Etruscan Countryside and especially look at Civita di Bagnoregio. It is AMAZING. Weather permitting (and we had a cool October day with no rain), you will see an incredible historical site that has less than a dozen residents now. You will need to be able to walk quite a distance (about 20 - 30 minutes each way) to and from the city, but it is so worth it. I would also plan at least a 2 hour visit. Check out Civita di Bagnoregio on TripAdvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g1931188-d8620969-Reviews-Civita_di_Bagnoregio-Civita_di_Bagnoregio_Province_of_Viterbo_Lazio.html
