Star Princess 10/18 Pacific Coastal 7 Night - Balcony to Mini for $199 pp

I didn't think it was that great of an offer, but since we had booked this on a casino rate my DH said to take it. As it turns out, we had some pretty crappy weather and it was wonderful to have the larger cabin to hang out in. Plus, gotta love the bathroom! Really like the fact that Princess lets you pick the cabin. We were pretty much mid-ship. We had 15-20 foot seas for about 36 hours and were quite comfortable.

We received and accepted an upsell from a premium view to a window suite. We were told by cruise critic members to ask for the double cruise credits. We asked the captain's circle rep onboard, who claimed she couldn't do it and to call when we got home. Once home, we called and were denied. After much home discussion, we decided to call again as it wasn't an upgrade, it was an upsell and we paid for the room. A couple phone calls later, we both received our extra cruise credit. It took perseverance on our parts, insistence and whining, but we got them.

You will/would have to do the same if you want the extra cruise credit.

ROYAL 10 Day Dec 20 3 pax in MS to PH Suite, offer came to approx. $500pp. The PH Suite offered was Aft Corner "Sydney", directly above the Vista Lounge. NO THANK YOU. Our cabin last year was directly above the PIANO in the piano bar, and we tend to turn in early, so it was ANNOYING! I also asked if the up-sell came with 2 Captain Circle credits and was told no. The MS has always served us well and we can each do a LOT with $50 per day!

That's way too much IMO.

I have read these posts with interest because we are on the February 2 sailing of the Star and are booked in an inside. When we booked, the cheapest balcony was about $1100 pp over inside. It has since dropped. With all the availability and the fact that final payment is due, I believe upsells are on the horizon. You feel $399 pp is too much. I was hoping to spend around $250-300 pp to upgrade. It’s a 15 night cruise. Last month we accepted an upsell from inside to obstructed deluxe balcony on the Regal for a 5 nighter. It was $39 pp, a great deal IMHO. What amount would you say would be a good offer for this upsell? Thanks.

We are on the Star Princess 15 day Dec. 19th Hawaii Cruise and just took an upsell that took us from an obstructed oceanview to a balcony on the Caribe Deck and we paid $249 each. It is in the exact location we like and we are going to love the extra room on the balcony.

11/26 Regal 7 night cruise, deluxe balcony to full suite $550pp and it included the ultimate balcony dinner.Unfortunately,it was the forward suites with a smaller balcony and nowhere near the suite lounge.I turned down the offer on Thursday and they are still showing available,so not many people took the deal.If they come down considerably I may make the change.

I got the same offer for the 12/3 Regal last week, there were 2 cabins when I got the offer, one Premium Suite at the front of the ship and one Penthouse suite on Riviera. I was interested so called and got a call back a few hours later, but I declined after talking to the lady, I just didn't think it was a great deal. Both suites are still available a week later, no one took the offer.

I don't get it....$550/pp for a suite and you turned it down?? What was your balcony cost?? Or....Are you saying they offered you an upgrade to suite for an additional $550??

The upsell price is in addition to the fare you've already paid for your current cabin.

We recently received an offer to a full suite from a balcony for $999 pp for 12 days. Didn't take it, and a week later there are still suites available on our sailing. Hoping to get another offer a little more reasonable.

Not an upgrade,an upsell. We are in a forward facing cabin with a huge balcony and have sailed in suites many times. The $1100 would have gotten us a larger room and breakfast in Sabstinis, which we rarely used when we had a suite. We get our laundry and a minibar so it was not a good deal for us.Also, these suites are not sold out for a reason, their location!JMHO

Not an upsell...but I did receive an email this week informing me of a complementary upgrade for my May 2018 caribbean cruise from a BF balcony (forward) to BA balcony (midship). A pleasant surprise and I'm happy with the new location.

Looks a GTY - did you originally book a BF GTY?

When I posted, I was thinking that often $99/pp is typically reported for a 1 week cruise and this is just about double that length, so $400 seemed out of line. If you noticed, I tagged my post with "IMO". So, it may not be too much for others. The value of any cabin category - whether at original booking or an up-sell - is a personal choice of what you want and can afford. Sure it helps to understand "the market" and what is going on, but in the end it's an individual call. I like your "hoping" price range better. RIght now, the price difference between lowest Inside to lowest Balcony on your cruise is $480/pp. I think any offer from Princess is going to be better with more inventory available. I'd need a better deal than most people because we don't normally book a Balcony and can live without it.

I agree with everything you said, especially the not usually booking balconies. The few times I have booked a balcony from the outset was when a particular TA had a special for a balcony package. ( We did that on Oceania a year or so ago, and with it being a repositioning, the balcony was a plus.) That being said, the balcony on a Caribbean cruise is not necessary to ME. On the Canada, it was helpful to check the outside temperatures and $39 pp was pocket change. On the Hawaii, with so many sea days and hopefully comfortable temperatures, it could be a nice addition. As far as gettig”a “better” deal than most, once again I agree with you. Getting a better deal or the best deal or better cabin is a challenge I absolutely love. I check prices at least once a day and request even the slightest change. (As I posted once before, I was literally fired by my TA for just that!) I’m glad you commented about the $400 pp being a poor upsell. Having enough information beforehand will make my decision about any proposed upsell easier. To be honest, I am afraid that since there is an oceanview category on the Star, I may not be offered the upsell to balcony.

I'm also a price/perk bulldog and have to have an outstanding deal from a TA to transfer a booking to, knowing that at least in my mind, I have a better chance of dealing directly with Princess customer service when the time arises, even up until a few days of sailing

You can contact princess at the same tel# for your first offer and they will tell you if there is a new price. I once turned down an offer that was too expensive, found out a week later others had been offered something less, so I called and they gave me the new deal.

I think it also depends on what you paid for the original cabin to determine if the upsell is a good deal. We booked far enough out that we got a relatively "low" price to start with so even with the upsell price, we have paid just under $2000 per person for a balcony on 15 nights over christmas. I'm ok with that!
