Rare boards Posted November 6, 2017 #76 Share Posted November 6, 2017 Can someone state for sure whether or not a hole can be punched in cards used on the Koningsdam. We are scheduled for a cruise on the ship and we use the lanyard, but also have a pouch. We will bring both, so we will be prepared, but it would be nice to know in advance. Rare 3rdGenCunarder Posted November 6, 2017 #77 Share Posted November 6, 2017 I stand semi-corrected. On my many Cruises on Holland America, I have personally noticed that most of the cruisers do not wear lanyards. This is not to say that it is a good thing or a bad thing because it is absolutely a matter of preference. I did not conduct a survey as it was relatively easy to notice if people had lanyards around their neck. I can’t speak for those who tuck them down their shirts on the ship however it’s still appeared as if most of the cruisers did not wear them. Of course, There were several cruisers who did wear them. I hope this clarifies my simple attempt to answer the OP’s question based On my personal experience. Your personal experience matches mine. I have seen more people without lanyards than with. Personally, I dislike them and won't wear one unless I'm on some kind of tour that requires them. I wore them enough for work that I don't want to wear them now. (I guess I'm like the guy who won't wear a collared shirt to get into the MDR because he had to dress up for work.)

(I guess I'm like the guy who won't wear a collared shirt to get into the MDR because he had to dress up for work.) Does that mean that if I wore underwear to work for 30 years, I don't have to wear it to the MDR anynore??? :D:D:D

catl331 Posted November 6, 2017 #81 Share Posted November 6, 2017 (edited) Can someone state for sure whether or not a hole can be punched in cards used on the Koningsdam. Yes it can be punched. Get Guest Services to do it for you, because the hole has to be carefully placed . See posts 21 and 52 of this thread. Also, I recently saw a picture posted by Boytjie IIRC showing an oblong hole in his K-dam key-card, but I can't find that at the moment. sail7seas Posted November 6, 2017 #82 Share Posted November 6, 2017 While I don't wear a lanyard, many folks do on cruises. How many wear them just depends upon the passengers on board and their personal wishes. No one is out of place if they are wearing them nor out of place if they are not. If you want to use one - go for it and if you choose not to, that's fine too. :D People choose to wear lanyards for their own reasons. It has nothing to do with being a newbie or a seasoned cruiser. It's just a matter of choice. I have never worn a lanyard and really dont' care who does or does not but in response to OP<,,, bring your own lanyard or buy one in the shop on board or in one of the ports alon th way. Seems almost all souvenir shops have low cost lanyards. I prefer to carry a small wristlet or wart a small crossbody purse.

Rare The-Inside-Cabin Posted November 6, 2017 #84 Share Posted November 6, 2017 Always use my Falken Tire lanyard and bring my own hand-punch to make a hole in the card. I like this lanyard since you can easily remove your card to give to a waiter if necessary without taking it off your neck... https://www.amazon.com/Black-EK-Lanyard-Detachable-10028/dp/B008DI06Q4 You can probably find cheaper ones if you shop around....I like the detachable feature. Falken Tire lanyard almost as good - it has a pretty robust lobster claw type clasp so you can remove items.
ArtsyCraftsy Posted November 7, 2017 #87 Share Posted November 7, 2017 This is the one I used on my last (first) cruise. I also have a “fancier” one that I may use on my next cruise. . It worked nicely as it has a small zippered compartment that held a few dollars. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

ArtsyCraftsy Posted November 7, 2017 #89 Share Posted November 7, 2017 That is nice looking. It always interesting how a simple question can go so sideways. Thanks -- I just can't imagine why some folks feel so strongly about this that they resort to questioning (and in some cases, disparaging) someone's fashion sense or motives for using a lanyard, and treat choosing a known available and fairly common option for keeping track of an important bit of cruise documentation as a character flaw. It's just a friggin' lanyard! ;p Ah well -- I'll continue to wear my lanyard as long as it continues to prove useful. If other folks don't like it, that's on them. I don’t understand why some feel the need to disparage lanyard users. I’m new to CruiseCritic, and have been on 60+ cruises ranging from expedition ships, to ‘luxury’ lines, and most often sail on ‘mass market’ lines, HAL in the forefront. I’ve never bothered to keep track of who uses lanyards and who doesn’t, and I don’t really care. I do know that the last time I was on a Carnival ship a couple of years ago, I noticed they were giving away lanyards in the casino and punching a hole in passengers cards. Perhaps HAL offers the same service in the casino as well? Maybe check at the casino and see if they’ll punch your card. I’ve often found stateroom cards left in slot machines in the casinos (on HAL) and have turned them in. I think maybe it’s easy to forget them, and a lanyard would certainly help. Obviously, not the only instance where a lanyard would be useful, but just my observation. Seems to me, as a newbie, some posters here are a little harsh. Not just on this thread...kinda makes a newbie afraid of posting 😕

Stevanb Posted November 7, 2017 #96 Share Posted November 7, 2017 IMHO lanyards are a neon sign saying 'I'm a newbie'. If you can't keep track of your card without having it strapped around your neck, well then.. ;) Like the people have there passports around their neck or mobile phones
Lizzie68 Posted November 7, 2017 #97 Share Posted November 7, 2017 Its amazing the bullying that came out of a lanyard question - and other topics. But then again, it is so easy for those who are cowards to use an internet forum to take out their frustrations with their own inadequacy. Wear a lanyard - or don't. No one else's business, and it causes no harm to others.;)
kenevenpar Posted November 7, 2017 #98 Share Posted November 7, 2017 We are not lanyard folks, but could certainly care less if someone likes them. According to DW, it is my job, no duty, to carry her card. She says "here Dear" (she had my name legally changed many years ago to Here Dear), and I pocket her card.

The word is 'incorrigible'. Amazing, but not surprising considering how the tone of the postings on this site has changed over the years. Sad. Just sad.
