rbslos18 Posted December 19, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Several accounts of the norovirus on RCCL said the patients were treated with otc medications. I thought there is no treatment for a virus! What medication(s) was likely given? RB

easyboy Posted December 19, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Interesting. As far as I know, there is no antibiotic for norovirus. Sent from my iPad using Forums
geocruiser Posted December 19, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Maybe they were meds to relieve the symptoms, not to cure it.
pamrose228 Posted December 19, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 19, 2017 I was delayed on the zuiderdam because of the virus. No love for nonviral ships Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Shmoo here Posted December 19, 2017 #7 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Probably otc meds to help manage the symptoms, not treating the virus itself. immodium, pepto bismal, type things. Typically, Imodium wouldn't be used. You want to eliminate the nasty bug from your body. Just lots of fluids, and time will take care of the virus. LovetheSea Posted December 19, 2017 #8 Share Posted December 19, 2017 I had this at a resort once. I drank a LOT of Gatorade. I had a really high fever. Lost a lot of electrolytes from the other symptoms.

Rare Keith1010 Posted December 19, 2017 #10 Share Posted December 19, 2017 According to the CDC Web Site there are no meds to make it go away but sure there are things that you can do. It can take 24 to 72 hours for someone to get over it in terms of how they feel. Keith
Pam in CA Posted December 19, 2017 #11 Share Posted December 19, 2017 I once got Noro while on a cruise from a Princess land overnight trip. The Medical Center gave me a shot to help control the diarrhea and vomiting. It helped but didn’t eliminate it completely. I was sick for days. :( Do not try to self-medicate. You could make it worse as OTC medications are ineffective vs. viruses. Contact the Medical Center and self-quarantine. The last thing you want to do is spread the virus. satxdiver Posted December 19, 2017 #12 Share Posted December 19, 2017 There was an outbreak of Noro on our cruise last month to the Mexican Riviera. It struck the last day on the ship, a sea day. The medical center was giving out OTC medicine. Fortunately I escaped the bullet on this one so I don't know what they were giving pax other than it was an OTC medicine. Rare Itchy&Scratchy Posted December 19, 2017 #13 Share Posted December 19, 2017 Dihydrogen monoxide is likely the best thing but be careful. It is very dangerous if inhaled so be sure to use it properly or it can actually result in death. Used properly though dihydrogen monoxide can be quite beneficial. it's better if you mixed dihydrogen monoxide with sugar and salt for electrolytes. If you have severe symptoms, a simple dihydrogen monoxide concoction may not be as helpful. That is why Gatorage and Pedialyte are most often recommended before the colonoscopy instead of plain water. My mom usually dehydrates to the point of delirium.... Bourbon, as any alcohol, will only add to dehydration...
doenbucket Posted December 20, 2017 #14 Share Posted December 20, 2017 We both had Noro on a cruise last December. There is no cure but we were given Avomine (sea sick meds) & Gastro Stop (or similar brand). These help relieve the symptoms only. I have always carried these meds anyway. Drink plenty of fluids if you can.

Rare JustinPlusLauren Posted December 27, 2017 #16 Share Posted December 27, 2017 I was sick with Noro for about two days, but it really took almost 2 weeks for my stomach to fully recover and be back to normal. It really did a number on me!
Rare grouchomarx Posted December 27, 2017 #17 Share Posted December 27, 2017 I had a friend who was treated for Noro (not on a cruise ship) and the doctor administered a powerful anti-emetic medication. So perhaps that's what they give?
