Navigator of the seas drydock

Recommended Posts

Just saw a post from another site. They confirmed that there are coke freestyle machines at the Windjammer and the Promenade.  Also some price info at Johnny Rockets.  4.99 for a regular burger- 5.99 for bigger burgers - 2.99 for fries.

No O3b upgrade.  Talked to Voom specialist who just came off an O3b ship.  He sympathized.

Sorry to hear this, but it seems to confirm that RC is not upgrading older ships.

^ as expected. In related news:

Apparently the ping rates will be sub 50 ms (compared to ~200ms for O3B and 600ms+ for Navigator and other non-O3B ships)

Boooooooooooooooooooo!

Well that stinks for sure.  Waste of money getting "Surf & Stream" on the older ships then...

Stream can still be faster on the older ships, but it's highly dependent on load.  In other words, it does not take much load to degrade the speed for all.

Thanks Bob - good point.

Needless to say...won't be Facetiming like we did on Oasis last March.

Facetime works, just with some lag.  Humans begin to detect delayed voice at 250ms of latency.  That's sort of a universal target for VoIP to stay within to avoid human perception of delayed audio.  Geosync Voom is over 600ms latency so you will talk over each other at times but it works.

Bandwidth or throughput is one thing.  When it comes to satellite internet ping is king.  Ping time (latency) is the disadvantage to geosync Voom.

We saw no signs of latency whatsoever in using Facetime, email, and other websites on Oasis last march with Surf & Stream.

What others have reiterated is the platform being run on the newly-refurbished Navigator of the Seas remains the "old school" internet technology. Good to know, as we'll simply avoid internet use on that ship altogether.

I've got a question regarding Stream vs. Download. Would I be better off downloading tv episodes over night to watch on my iPad on the following day or downright stream them via iTunes while on the ship? I'm not sure I get all this tech talk 🙂

In a nutshell yes...

All the techy stuff essentially means the streaming speed isn't solid enough to support either solid video or downloads of big files (like your movie example).  It's OK for email and basic internet use.

I think you will find it less annoying to download overnight.

Neither, download them at home before you leave - your sail mates will appreciate it.

Hello!  I know this is off topic but wondered if anyone had any inside info on the Oasis crane accident. My friends are supposed to sail on her this Sunday.

Soooooo. Just received an email from Royal in regards to my July 1 sailing. Originally had requested room 1108 as its one of the new rooms with the balcony. They moved me to a regular junior suite on deck 9. It seems that the junior suite rooms on deck 11 can only hold 2 people and not 4. They have recategorized these rooms for 2 person occupancy. Was really looking forward to that very large balcony and the direct pool access for the kids. They at least gave me an OBC.
