Taxi Fare/Malecon/Hotel Rosita, Puerto Vallarta

It should be no more than 80 Pesos....if you leave the port and get a regular local taxi (they are usually Yellow but can also be white). But taxis is PV tend to try to overcharge those they perceive as cruise ship passengers so you might be told $100. Keep in mind that this is only about $6 and its for a taxi that can generally hold 4. Uber is about $65 (Pesos). Having lived here for 12 winters we are used to using local buses and taxis. But Uber is starting to win us over because they are usually very nice cars (nicer than the taxis) and somewhat less money. But of course, you do need the Uber App, an existing account, and a working Smartphone.

Your other choice is to walk out of the port up to the main road (where you have to go to find a local taxi) and just take any bus with "Centro" in the window. The bus fare is 7 1/2 Pesos or about 40 cents. Buses do turn a few blocks before getting to the Rosita,,,but just wait until it turns right (to parallel the coast) and get off in a few block. You then walk down to the Malecon which is only a block away.

And yes, you are absolutely correct that the Rosita is at the Northern end of the Malecon (across the street). And if you miss home there is a McDonalds on that first section of the Malecon (which makes about as much sense as those who spend a port day at Walmart :).

We walk out of the port terminal area and up to the corner gas station where there are always local (yellow) taxis waiting. Discuss price before you get into the cab. We pay between $6-8 USA if we don't have pesos. On the way back you can find taxis waiting and just discuss price again. Depending on how far you have walked the price may be a little higher.

I realize that this is an older thread, but we are visiting PV in December and want to take a taxi from the cruiseport to the Malecon.

Can you tell us in which direction from the terminal is the 'corner gas station' you refer to, and how far it is from the terminal?

Many thanks!

It depends what pier you will be docked on. But it is on your site of the street, most of the times make a right turn. You will see the Pemex ((gasstation) sign.

question about busses can we take a buss to th aquaventures waterpark in Nuevo Vallarta from the pier we arrive ncl star dec 24 there are 11 of us

thanks

Yes you can. Cross the street to the busstops in front of Walmart. There always is a guy with a clipboard, he will tell you what bus to take. Best is to have Pesos to pay the fare, but most ((not all)drivers will accept US $ at a lousy exchange rate.

Depending on where your docked, there’ll be taxis in front of Liverpool and Walmart. Liverpool is closest to the north pier.

Walmart is across that busy street in front of the port. Is Liverpool also across the street?? The gas station is on the same side as the port so we'd just walk along the street to the right to find it. I'd prefer to stay on the same side since the direction of the malecon is also on that side of the street.

Yes Liverpool, inside the Galleria Mall is next to Walmart, so you need to cross the street. Look for the Pemex sign at the same side of the street of the cruise terminal. Also a bit more down in front of the Soriana store there will be cabs waiting. Those cabs charge per ride, always make the price before entering.

Adding to Ine's informative post we would suggest that cruisers do everything possible to hide the fact that they are cruisers :). It is really "strange" that taxi fares (and even prices of goods from certain vendors) seem to increase if they think you are off a cruise ship. DW and I always laugh when we see some cruisers walking by....with their cruise card hanging around their neck (we will not even do this when on a ship) or carrying their HAL Bag. As one who lives in PV a few months a year, when taxis try to rip us off with incorrect prices I immediately tell them "I am not a cruise passenger." Its amazing at how the price changes :).

Since we are very active cruisers who happen to live in PV we have some understanding of the mentality of fellow cruisers. We know that some cruisers think that telling folks you are on a ship might get you a special discount or something extra. But the reality is that locals often figure cruisers are a bit naive when it comes to local pricing. And also keep in mind that if you sit on a beach using a towel from the ship...every vendor will not only know you are a cruise passenger but will also know which ship :). This is not always a bad thing as the beach vendors love cruisers, but just be aware they know and will often try to take advantage of naiveté when bargaining. And yes, you should try to bargain with both beach and street vendors although have some respect and do not try to beat them out of every last Peso :). These are very hard working folks who might be on the government dole in most many countries (hint hint hint) but in Mexico they work hard to pay their own way and support their family.

Hank you are full of great info. We have used the buses in P.V. many times & love them. But have seen the info. posted that bus fare is now 10 pesos to accommodate the new vehicles. My question is, do they STILL take US dollars? In the past we have just used like $3 for four of us. Of course that would be a little more than 10 pesos each. Should we still try to use US. And would $4 Us be acceptable? Also THANKS for the 'heads up' on flashing our Cruise cards. Will hide the 'stuff' from now on!

We've noticed the rate difference when coming back to the ship from the malecon. Found that it is cheaper to go to either the Soriana or Wal-Mart and walk to the ship.

Of course everyone, and all vendors, including taxi drivers are very aware of cruise ship schedules.

So when a cruise ship pulls in to port, and suddenly the streets are flooded with a 'boatload' of foreign tourists right outside the cruise terminal, it's pretty much impossible to 'hide the fact that we are cruisers'.

So that idea goes immediately out the door. Any other suggestions?

That is true, if you are right outside the cruise port. Cross the street and act like one of the thousands that live in the area and you will be fine. We are a community of over 200.,000 souls of which thousands are from North of the border. A few thousand cruise passengers simply blend into the masses unless they call attention to themselves. When it comes to taxis you should have an idea about the going fare and negotiate it before you get in the taxi. If the driver tried to overcharge just move on and find another taxi (or summon an Uber car). Uber will usually charge about 100 Pesos from Walmart (port area) to the Malecon. Taxis will want somewhat more. Keep in mind that 100 Pesos is about $5.50 and that would be for a taxi that can hold (tightly) 4 persons. If we are feeling generous we might offer a taxi 140 Pesos (from the Port area into town) knowing that we are overpaying :). If you have 4 that would be about $2 per person into town. If the 4 of you took one of the local buses it would cost you a total of 40 Pesos (about 55 cents a person) to town.

Unless they have recently changed their fare scheme, the taxis within the port (who have a federal franchise) will charge "per person" rather then per taxi.  Last year we talked to some cruisers who were charged $5 (US) per person, one way, to Centro (which includes the Rosita).  Whether you can negotiate a lower price is questionable.
