Rome for Handicapped

We were in Rome, a couple of months ago. I am slightly handicapped, as I use a cane to walk around with. We happen to be in Rome on the first Sunday of a month, where many of the venues are free. We got to the Coliseum about 8:30AM and the line was about 2 hours long, or so we were told. I simply cannot stand for that long a period, so I went to the front area and asked if they had any special arrangements for anyone who might be handicapped. The very nice gentleman opened the gate and escorted us right in. Now, I was not looking to take advantage of being slightly handicapped, but again, I cannot stand for any long periods of time and they offered, and we took them up on it. The same thing happened at the Forum and again, made special arrangements for anyone who is handicapped, and let us right . I can see some trying to take advantage of this, but we were so amazed that the venues in Rome are so aware of the limits of handicapped people.

So this is a heads up to anyone visiting Rome who is handicapped, take advantage of it, if you want. Obviously it's up to each individual and some just do not wish to be made to have any special privileges, but if you need it, it 's there for you.

Cheers

Len

Glad you had a good experience in Rome, but museums throughout Europe have provisions for disabled visitors. Many of them don't charge for entry and your companion will also get in FOC.

Most lend out wheelchairs and some even have mobility scooters to borrow FOC.

All details to be found on the relevant websites.
