capitalbarry Posted January 31, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 31, 2018 Hello group.... Can anybody confirm that the FOUL SMELL on MSC SEASIDE has been fixed or is being addressed by MSC??? Has anybody that cruise on her confirm the SMELL?
cruzeluver Posted January 31, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 31, 2018 Already being discussed here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2592848 We were on the ship last week and in my view some of the reports were greatly exaggerated. I believe any odor problems are very isolated to a few areas, not pervasive and can dissipate quickly. The only time I personally smelled anything unusual was while waiting to disembark in Nassau on deck four forward. But by the time we returned to the ship it was gone. Never smelled anything in any other public places or in our stateroom. Some people we met on board did have a smell in the room but it was taken care of pretty quickly. They were very far forward on deck 15. Rooms even two doors away from them had no issue.

For us the smell was bad. I'm a pretty easy going cruiser and went on this trip with low expectations. We had (5) cabins on deck 10, 11, 12 and 14. All (5) cabins had this sewer smell in the hallway and in our cabins. It was difficult to deal with the smell. My 75 year old mom and her friend even complained. Additionally if you sit near the hot tub on deck 18 it smells there as well. This is the hot tub right next to end of the blue slides.

Rare BermudaBound2014 Posted February 1, 2018 #6 Share Posted February 1, 2018 The foul smell is still being reported. This is from someone on the ship right now (2/1/18). The whole idea of people walking in rest rooms that have flooded with sewage is EWWWWWW. I'll go ahead and post my experience here as I'm on Seaside now, there can be some really bad sewer stench at times. It can hit you in the face while walking deck 19 by the water park and can just linger around annoyingly at the main pools aft of the stacks........ On a possible related topic, a couple times now the aftish public restrooms all around MDR's clogged and overflowed during the dinnertime rush. People continued to use them. #1TravelMom Posted February 16, 2018 #7 Share Posted February 16, 2018 I talked a large group into joining us on the Seaside. Everyone is reading reviews and wants to cancel. Any word if the sewage smell can be corrected. Also, this is a very casual group - all eat at the buffet 3 meals a day. If the dinner buffet does not start getting better reviews, I have no hope of saving this group. I really hope MSC is reading the reviews. I'd love to try this ship. We have been on more than 55 cruises. It would be nice to add another line to the list.
tompeter Posted February 16, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 16, 2018 If your friends have read the reviews and already "formed" an opinion, do you really want to risk persuading them to go anyway and risk them being unhappy and regretting their trip? lcpagejr Posted February 16, 2018 #9 Share Posted February 16, 2018 What I have read.... They are currently/actively working on solutions to fix this problem. As for the buffet....I'm afraid your group will be disappointed in the Dinner options. Only the smaller buffet on Deck 16 is open for dinner and the selections are limited, but you will still be able to select a balanced dinner. However, you will not see the varied selections of hot dishes and salads you may be accustomed to on other lines you have sailed.
mafig Posted February 16, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 16, 2018 I'm sure that eating three meals a day in the buffet will not be enjoyable for them on this ship. Just out of curiosity, what other ships has this group sailed on?

cruzeluver Posted February 16, 2018 #12 Share Posted February 16, 2018 As for smells, I would not be too concerned. Was not an issue for us. Now if you plan to do all buffet dining you will encountered more limited options. We avoid buffets like the plague so a non-issue for us but your group may not like it unless they are ok with just the basics and not a full elaborate buffet. There is a lot of negative marketing at play on this site. Debde Posted February 16, 2018 #14 Share Posted February 16, 2018 Back when I did many Royal Caribbean cruises and followed that board closely, every once in a while someone would report a certain ship and sewage smells. That hype dies down, smell goes away and on that ship sails!! It happens on all ships. You can not plan when and if it will happen but it does. On that note-everyone be careful what you flush!!:o Eating at a buffet is highly opinionated and when some people say it su">s, many others will love it. People used to say they would never eat in the Royal Caribbean buffet because they never found anything they liked, I found it quite the opposite. NCL had an OK buffet but never needed it due to the massive amounts of dinner options. That all being said-I would never cancel due to those issues. I'd experience it myself and then make up my own mind.;)

There have been 5,000 passengers a week on Seaside; for perspective the count of those noticing such should be taken into consideration. We are going B2B in a couple of weeks and are not concerned at all, but will duly note such if apparent. I don't have a comment on the buffet at all; didn't eat at the buffet on the MSC Divina last year B2B "other than getting the fresh made pizza's" (THE BEST at sea we believed). We looked around and, honestly, it was packed with a lot of passengers eating a lot of food. Back to the sewer smell, and I know it doesn't make it better, is that ALL of the cruise lines and most of the ships experience "sewer odor" issues at one time or another. A quick 'google search reveals the following (I stopped, the list could literally go on and on). plantlady104 Posted February 16, 2018 #16 Share Posted February 16, 2018 The Seaside buffet for B and L were fine, but the L is still not the variety you will get on the other major cruise lines. As stated, the D buffet is the smaller of the two, but has a themed section of the night, i.e.: Indian, Greek, Italian etc. But again, not the large variety as other cruise lines. The smell is hit or miss, depending upon a variety of factors. So if the buffet is going to be the highlight of the cruise, and all 3 meals per day are eaten there, then yes, I think they will be disappointed. The Seaside is really setup for enjoying dinner in the MDR setting.

We have been on more than 55 cruises. It would be nice to add another line to the list. I find myself in a similar situation. My group isn't large, but there are 10 of us for an annual girls trip in June. We did Yacht Club on Divina and found it a very good value for our group. I love the looks of Seaside and would like to try the ship but the two issues you mention keep me holding me back. 1) While all ships have sewage issues from time to time, I believe the sewage smell on Seaside is unique. According to several reports from people on the ship, MSC has admitted to an actual design flaw in the Seaside that is going to require modifications. As of this sailing, the issue has still not been resolved. 2) The Seaside has an entirely new design for buffets. I've been sailing for over 30 years and as far as I know, the buffet set up is also unique to Seaside. Basically, breakfast and lunch seem about the same as other MSC ships (besides Pizza, I find the MSC buffets are just OK), but dinner is a new time low as far as I'm concerned. I assume you've seen the videos? Extremely small selection for dinner. We don't like all our meals in buffet, but we don't like all our meals in MDR either. The prices for Seaside are plummeting. That's why I haven't written off the ship entirely. We can sail this ship for 50% less than any of the RCL oasis class ships on the sailings I"m tracking. That's a lot of money to leave on the table. We can do a lot of specialty dining and still save significant cash. All I can recommend is that you continue to do what I am and monitor the board carefully. Hopefully things will improve rapidly. Cruiser21 Posted February 16, 2018 #18 Share Posted February 16, 2018 BB, You say the prices on Seaside are plummeting. lcpagejr Posted February 16, 2018 #19 Share Posted February 16, 2018 BB... My research does not show that... As a matter of fact the June 9th sailing is SOLD OUT Pricing for other June dates comparable to other lines. Unfortunately it lists balcony prices on each internet website at lowest price (which in MSC is Bella)....Didn't have time to price check each experience. But I don't see a major difference in Balcony and suites vs other 7 day cruises on other lines

We have been on more than 55 cruises. It would be nice to add another line to the list.. My wife (agent) received the following reply from her MSC representative a few days ago. ?? Yes, that issue has been resolved. We unfortunately experienced a ventilation issue with one of the air conditioning units due to an erroneous installation during the ships construction. Its location has resulted in some occasional uptake of undesirable odors from other systems on the ship which were becoming more frequent under some specific wind conditions. A technical solution has already been identified and implemented. It has considerably reduced the bad odors and will progressively eliminate the issue entirely. diesel1973 Posted February 16, 2018 #21 Share Posted February 16, 2018 I agree if you have your doubts to look elsewhere. Your friend ships might be compromised after your cruise. We cruise RCCL and X and were very dissapointed with the Seaside. I cruise to relax and enjoy myself but was not possible with constant problems daily on Seaside. Granted it is a beautiful ship and others have had a good time but MSC is not for us. Good luck with your decision!
