Any recommendations for hotels in Santiago or Valparaiso?

Remember you will be departing from San Antonio, about an hour by bus from both Santiago and Valparaiso. NCL probably doesn't run a shuttle from Valparaiso to San Antonio now, but there is a local bus service.

That said, we stayed at Gran Hotel Gervasoni in Valparaiso before last year's Sun cruise. Loved it. Well located to walk to restaurants snd into city centre, and beautiful views of the bay. It sits high up the hill. The building rattled during an earthquake, but no damage. Those period hotels were made to last!

Santiago- Hotel Director Golf was a great one for us- quick walk to the subway, plenty of restaurants around. From the hotel we walked to the cable car and took it to top of the hill and took the funicular down. Very convenient.

Santiago: Solace hotel in Providencia. In a quiet street near the subway. Great area, very safe, nice rooms.

Valparaiso: Ibis hotel, good beds, not expensive. San Antonio is not interesting. Nothing to see and few facilities. So don’t stay there. You can take a bus.

The Sheraton in Santiago was quite nice, with a beautiful pool area.

The day we were there, Iron Maiden was also there - the drummer taking selfies with people at the bar, and

at one point it was just us, and Bruce Dickinson swimming in the pool.

Hence the name of my book: "Swimming With Iron Maiden" (I haven't written it yet, have no idea what kind of book it will be - might be a travelogue, cookbook, how to, pop-up... but I do know the title!)

We are taking the NCL 16 day cruise from Santiago(Valparaiso) and would like to hear from anyone regarding hotels in either place. All help appreciated!

We like the Hotel San Francisco in Santiago. It fronts on a busy street, but our room wasn't noisy. The hotel is near a traffic light, so we could cross the busy street, and from there it's walking distance on a pedestrian only street to the main square.

The hotel has a huge old lobby (with a bar)--a good place to wait and people-watch. The concierge and bellmen were extremely helpful with storing luggage and calling a taxi to the airport. The taxi-ride to the airport was not long and the fare was reasonable.

Santiago has a truly great museum to Pre-Columbian art--just a couple of blocks from the main square. In addition to the main square, walk down the busy street in front of the hotel to the Capitol building and try to catch the changing of the guard if you can--it's quite spectacular. Behind the capitol is a statue to Salvador Allende.

Seconded! We stayed at the Plaza San Francisco in mid-January 2018 - delightful faded elegance and brilliant staff - very friendly and helpful. Feirs Park Hotel in Esmeralda, Buenos Aires is similar - our room (907) in early February was a studio so lots of space in which to relax. Very friendly and helpful staff. Decor and Fixtures & Fittings were not the highest standard - more like a bad-DIY job but the restaurant was very good, the atmosphere relaxed - deal for collapsing after walking all over the city in baking temperatures.

The neighborhood is safe. There are lots of people around. There's an interesting historic neighborhood immediately to the right as you walk out of the hotel and around towards the back.

There is a big Italian restaurant right next door (to the left as you walk out of the hotel). The food is great, and the prices are modest; unfortunately that means the restaurant is crowded and the kitchen falls behind: we had to wait a long time for our food. The hotel has a restaurant--OK, but not great. Also, the bar has sandwiches. Other than that there are mostly pizza fast food joints on the main street. Friends of ours got a recommendation for a really nice restaurant that they raved about, but either they took a taxi there, or we just didn't walk far enough to find it. This is a neighborhood of ordinary Chileans on their way to and from work or shopping. It is not ritzy and there aren't a lot of tourists.

IBIS in both cities. I had never stayed at an IBIS prior to SA cruise last year, but I will not hesitate to book one again if the opportunity arises. Very clean, modern facilities at very reasonable prices compared to other properties in the areas.

Agree. Ibis Estacion Central or Providencia in Santiago are clean and very reasonably priced. However, if OP is looking for better amenities, other suggested hotels may be the alternative. I think the options for buses to San Antonio are better in Santiago.

Plaza San Francisco is in a good area. Hotel restaurant is reasonably priced and there is a good value local cafe/restaurant, Indianapolis, (Open until 17:00 each day) about 50 yards from the hotel (turn left out of the hotel). It gets very busy at lunchtime with local residents/office workers. 2 x Pizza main courses + 2 fresh pineapple juice drinks CP10,300 incl.service charge (£13 or USD 18).

Local streets quite busy but safe - just be aware when using cameras or taking currency from pockets etc. The area around the Fruit Market was most prone, but we were on a Free Walking Tour with SpicyChile.cl and our guide Kai warned us and acted as lookout whilst we took pictures etc.
